Something we've noticed over a lot of holiday seasons: bigger firms and high-value service businesses are more likely to pick a foil card.

It isn't universal. Plenty of firms send a printed card every year and it does exactly what they need. But once a list gets past a few hundred names, or the firm is in wealth management, law, or another business where the relationship is the product, foil shows up more often than not.

When we ask why, it's usually one of two things. The first is association: the card should feel like the firm, and a firm that presents itself as premium doesn't want the one piece of physical mail it sends all year to feel ordinary. The second is simpler. December desks get a lot of cards. The one that catches light gets picked up first, and the one that gets picked up is the one that gets remembered.

Thanksgiving cards land in a quieter mailbox, and the message is easy: thank you. No holiday to navigate, no debate over what's appropriate for a big list. Just gratitude, before the year gets loud.

Here's the math on a client mailing, because "expensive" and "worth it" are two different questions.

All-in, a premium card that's printed, addressed with a real pen, stamped, and mailed runs a few dollars per recipient. Call it the price of a coffee.

Now the other side. What's one client worth to your firm over the years you work together? For most advisors, CPAs, and attorneys, that number has a comma in it.

So the question isn't whether a card costs $3 or $5. It's whether one card a year moves the odds that a client stays, or mentions you to a friend, by even a little. If it does, the mailing pays for itself many times over on a single relationship.

Run your own numbers: cards per year, cost per card, average client value. It's a two-minute exercise and it usually settles the budget conversation for good.

Which side of the card faces out in the envelope? There's actually a right answer.

Slip the card in with the front facing the envelope flap, fold at the top. When your recipient opens it, the design greets them first - right-side up, ready to read. Not the back of the card, not upside down.

Small detail? Sure. But when you're sending hundreds of cards to your best clients, the small details are the whole point. They remember a card that felt considered.

A quick way to clean up your mailing list during the calm before the holiday season rush.

If you send cards to clients every year, the list is worth a look before anything prints. Four things to check:

1- Addresses. Anyone who moved offices or changed firms this year. This is where most returned mail comes from.

2- Names and titles. Promotions, name changes, new partners. Easy to miss if the list carried over from last year.

3- Duplicates. The same person at two addresses, or entered twice under different spellings.

4- People who shouldn't be on it. Former clients, contacts who've passed away. Worth one careful pass.

The reason it's worth the time: every card that reaches the right person at the right address does what you sent it to do. A cleaner list means fewer cards wasted and more that actually land.

Most lists take about 20 minutes to review in a spreadsheet. Doing it now means it's done before the season gets busy.

Writing the same birthday message in a few hundred client cards? The structure that works:

A warm wish + a line of appreciation + your sign-off. Two or three sentences. That's the whole job.

Borrow one of these:

"Happy birthday! We're lucky to work with clients like you. Enjoy your day."

"Wishing you a great year ahead. Thanks for trusting us with your business."

"Happy birthday from all of us at [firm name]. Hope it's a great one."

"Another trip around the sun - hope this one's the best yet. Happy birthday!"

Skip anything that reads like a sales pitch. The card showing up on their birthday is the message.
