New daily driver means another radio install day. Finally got the FTM500 in the car. Radio body is mounted in the trunk, got the head mounted up by the shifter, through the glass antenna (1.22:1 on 146.520) and all the cables tied up and hidden. Not easy doing an install on a Subaru WRX but it’s done! Now I need to wash the car. The dust from harvest season has been rough with how dry it’s been!

Woke the girls up to go check out the Northern Lights. Not the greatest photos but not bad for holding a phone! Oldest was super excited to go check them out! We are located in north central Illinois for those wondering. If you got some photos post them up.

Another little project I’ve been working on. I needed a solution for setup and tear down in a quick way so I came up with this little gem. Harbor Freight 4800 waterproof box, TYT 9800 quad band radio, Yaesu FT-891 HF radio, LDG 125w tuner, couple external speakers, rope light, and a 2” exhaust fan. Antenna ports are under the shelf on the back of the box and everything runs off 12 volts DC. Connect the antennas and power and you are ready to play some radio!

I’ll test everything this weekend before field day in two weeks!

Starting the prep for Summer Field Day coming up in a few weeks. I’m always googling the band plan on my phone since my portable radio doesn’t have the band edges programmed into it. This year I’m gonna fix that! Just a small piece of the prep I’ve been working on!

Picked up a cool little gadget for the shack! This little box allows you to hook up power from your power supply as well as power from a battery backup. If you lose power at your house the box will automatically switch over to your battery bank! It will also trickle charge AGM and SLA batteries! Unfortunately it will not work with Lifepo4 batteries.

Spent the weekend setting up a wired network in the shack. That means I now have the ability to remote access the Icom 7610! Definitely fun to play around chasing parks on the air stations or general cruising of the radio spectrum.

Sounds like quite a few people are dealing with a cell phone outage today! One thing that continues to work is Amateur (Ham) Radio. Looks like the peak of the storm was last night about 10pm Central time. The solar storm was pretty severe with being an X class flare. We should return back to normal later today. Hopefully cell systems will be back online later tonight. If not take some time tonight and look into getting licensed for Ham radio or GMRS!

Decided to run APRS on the way home from work today. This popped up on the screen, that’s a heck of a trip for the 2 meter band! Usually I’m lucky to get 100 miles.
