Valuing Your Volunteers

Laura Trouille, PhD, has been leading the The Adler Planetarium Citizen Science efforts, including Zooniverse.

In this video she shares how she used her growing expertise to bridge her research experience with volunteers. One of the challenges that came up was the moment the Zooniverse program became an important project builder throughout the world. A wonderful situation but, they had to scale up their project review process and Trouille describes how she needed to gather a large group of volunteers to accomplish their goals. She needed to quickly find the volunteers and bring value to them though the prestige of participating in the program and acknowledging their efforts. Being able to act quickly and show value and appreciation to the Zooniverse volunteers is what helped to bring about this huge group of volunteers to help manage the review process of projects completed on the Zooniverse platform.

Becoming a Successful Leader

Denis Neville is founder and CEO of CoreFx Ingredients, discusses how as a start-up founder he had “get out of the weeds” which means that sometimes founders try to do all the work themselves but that they need to bring in team members to handle the business of day to day while he took the reigns as the CEO. He states that “Managers do things right, while Senior Leaders do the right thing”.

Constant communication is the base of his leadership as he communicates with his team as often as he can with an open door policy, town hall meetings, etc. The direction of the company really comes from his words and what he does so he leads by example.

Product Development Philosophies for Growth

Sean Chou serves as Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Catalytic. When it comes to workflow, Catalytic is the leader in creating efficiencies. Workflow needs to be an easy platform, easy for a business owner to use. As a CEO he talks about how he needs to help his team to understand the direction that the company is taking as a whole and how and why it is moving that way, so that every team member is working toward that goal, no matter the goal.
