An SSD's flash memory almost never runs out first. Controllers and power failures usually do, and a few simple habits push that day back.

Signs an SSD is starting to fail:
→ Drive suddenly turns read-only
→ Freezing or blue screens
→ Drive disappears after reboot
→ File transfers fail mid-copy

The guide covers what each sign means, which ones call for an immediate backup, and the maintenance steps that keep drives healthy longer.

When did you last check your SSD's health?

Your hard drive is most likely to fail in its first six months, not its fifth year.
Hard drive failure follows a bathtub curve: high risk early, a long quiet stretch in the middle, then rising risk again after year five. A drive acting up before six months was probably damaged in manufacturing or shipping, not worn out.
Swipe through for the four SMART attributes that give you warning, and when to audit the drives holding data you cannot afford to lose.

Reinstalling macOS is not a universal safe fix. On a MacBook that won't turn on, it can permanently erase data a logic board repair could have recovered.

The order that actually protects your data:
→ Rule out cable and liquid damage first
→ Check chip type before any reset
→ Try Safe Mode before Recovery Mode

A Windows update or BIOS change is often all it takes to land a PC on the BitLocker recovery blue screen.

The screen looks alarming, but it is a security check, not a sign the files are gone. With the 48-digit recovery key, there are several ways to get back into Windows.

Inside the guide:
→ What triggers the recovery screen
→ Where recovery keys are stored
→ Five fixes, ranked by risk
→ What to avoid without the key
→ When a lab can help

Save this post. It is the kind of guide worth having before the blue screen shows up.

The "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device" error has a safe side and a dangerous side. One BIOS check shows which one you're on.

Full guide: https://www.salvagedata.com/fix-reboot-and-select-proper-boot-device

SalvageData's HDD recovery engineers wrote this one from the lab. Loose cables, wrong boot order, and corrupted boot files are all fixable at home. A failing drive is not, and Startup Repair or bootrec on that drive can cost you the files for good.

SATA, SSD, NVMe, SCSI. The label on the box changes what you get for your money, and what happens when the drive stops working.

SATA is still the cheapest way to hold a lot of data.
Solid state removes the moving parts, so it survives a drop and reads faster.
NVMe is not a separate kind of storage at all; it is a faster interface for solid-state.
SCSI is built for servers and priced like it.

Whichever you pick, every drive fails mechanically, logically, or electrically. The type just changes which one you get.

There is a specific point where a Dell laptop failure stops being fixable at home.
Breakdown here: https://www.salvagedata.com/blog/dell-laptop-wont-turn-on

What the failure state determines:
→ Flea drain resolves no-power failures
→ F12 diagnostics map POST failures
→ BIOS visibility confirms drive health
→ Clicking drives require immediate shutdown

How do you approach a laptop that won't start?

Recovery software cannot fix a mechanically clicking hard drive. Every diagnostic run forces more reads on a mechanism that is already failing.

Full guide: https://www.salvagedata.com/blog/why-is-your-hard-drive-clicking

The most common responses to a clicking drive actually accelerate the damage.

What makes a clicking drive worse:

→ Running disk repair or CHKDSK

→ Freezing the drive

→ Opening the drive casing yourself

→ Continuing to use the drive

Not every white screen means the same thing. Some are a display glitch; others are a warning sign that your drive is failing underneath Windows.

How to tell which one you're dealing with:

→ Screen appears after Windows loads: software

→ Screen appears at power-on: hardware

→ Drive missing from BIOS: storage failure

→ Slow reads before the crash: warning sign

→ External monitor test isolates the cause

Have you run into a white screen that turned out to be hardware-related?

Windows white screen of death signals a crashed driver, failed update, or hardware issue.

iPhone keeps restarting? Here's how to fix it without losing any data: salvagedata.com/blog/iphone-keeps-restarting

If it's a hardware issue, you'll need a professional technician to help. Signs the restart loop is a hardware problem:
→ Restarts every 2 to 3 minutes
→ Began after a drop or impact
→ Began after liquid exposure
→ Persists after a clean iOS install
→ Panic-full logs repeat the same component
