We have another informative blog post courtesy of Dr. Schiller on foodgenesandme.com

This weeks explores the concept of 'penetrance' and 'expressivity' in the genetic field. From the post:

"One part of this answer has to do with genetic penetrance, which is the percentage of people with a genetic variant that have a particular disease or trait."

"The severity of symptoms associated with a variant is called expressivity. For those with a variant, symptoms can range from severe, moderate, or might not even be noticeable. This is called variable expressivity. "

The post goes on to explain how diet can affect both penetrance and expressivity. Click the link to read this fascinating post and don't forget to sign up for the open beta today! https://foodgenesandme.com/en/blog/post/7-penetrance-and-expressivity-impact-genetic-reporting-.html

Genetic testing companies need to do a better job disclosing that some genetic variants may not affect you, a term called low penetrance , and also may produce mild or no symptoms, which is called low expressivity . We strive to educate you about how your food choices and genetics impacts your healt...

Happy Monday everyone! It's time to highlight another gene that can affect our diet.

Below we see the LCT gene, or LAC. The LCT gene on Chromosome 2 contains instructions for creating an enzyme called lactase, which helps break down lactose. As most people age, their lactase levels decrease, making it more difficult to digest milk products. Severe lactose intolerance can make you feel uncomfortable after just one bite of cheese.

At least nine LCT gene mutations cause congenital lactase deficiency, also called congenital alactasia. FG&M can help detecting such mutations and give alternatives to help avoid discomfort.

We've already shared how certain genetic traits are responsible for gluten allergy or Celiac's disease, but did you know that there are other unique traits/reactions to food caused by our genes?

For example, a legit alcohol flush reaction happens after just one drink — sometimes even less. It'll make your face turn bright red and can come with other unpleasant symptoms like headaches, nausea, and sleepiness. The variant that causes the reaction is most commonly found in people from Asia. A toxic substance in booze stays in their system, causing the blood vessels in their faces to expand.

If already subscribe to services like 23andMe there's absolutely no reason to subscribe to FG&M's personalized diet plan. Sign up for the open beta at foodgenesandme.com

Depending on which genes you have, there’s a possibility that having at least one alcoholic beverage a day can actually help you 🍻

On the flip side, you could also have a genetic variant that raises your chance of being affected by Esophageal Cancer. You can find out which gene you have by using Food Genes & Me!

There is a possibility that you can have both genes, but what would you do in that situation? Read our latest blog post to find out:

Punch line- In all recreational genetics analyses, sometimes two variants have opposing effects. In our example drinking more alcohol elevates the risk for esophageal cancer, but lowers the risk for alcohol-induced pancreatitis. We suggest that you decide what to do on a case-by-case basis consideri...
