Canadian startup DarwinAI has been bought by Apple who plan to use the technology to bolster the iPhone maker's generative AI push this year.

Already some of their employees have joined Apple as a result of the acquisition, with Darwin's VP of People Operations and COO moving into Apple's machine learning division. The purchase also brings University of Waterloo AI researcher Alexander Wong, who previously helped build the startup, to the tech giant.

DarwinAI, which previously helped Intel to accelerate their hardware using artificial intelligence, is joining up just as Apple is anticipated to announce some major generative AI features this year with its iOS 18 software update and by exploring the potential of adding AI to AirPods, among other things. Intel’s Core i9-14900KS processor, which is now available for purchase, has the ability to hit a 6.2GHz max clock speed. But apparently the chip can also reach 9.1GHz with the help of some liquid helium.

On Thursday, Asus and the PC overclockers at ElmorLabs announced they were able to briefly break the 9.1GHz barrier using Intel’s newest desktop processor, a new world record. To do this, ElmorLabs founder Jon Sandström and colleagues installed the Intel processor on the $649 Asus ROG Maximum Z790 Apex Encore motherboard. They also ditched liquid nitrogen, the usual cooling agent that overclockers use when running a PC chip beyond the normal limits — a process that generates immense heat. Instead, the team resorted to liquid helium, which can reach even colder temperatures, giving them a better shot at reaching a higher speed.
