🚨 DO NOT CALL THAT NUMBER! 🚨
🛑 Stop. Verify. Protect yourself.
If a warning suddenly takes over your computer and says:
⚠️ “Your computer has been infected!”
⚠️ “Microsoft has locked your PC!”
⚠️ “Do not shut down!”
⚠️ “Call support immediately!”
STOP! 🛑
A scary pop-up claiming to be Microsoft does NOT mean it’s actually Microsoft.
This is one of the most common tech-support scams I see.
The goal is simple: scare you into calling before you have time to think.
Once you call, the scammer may try to convince you to:
❌ Give them control of your computer.
❌ Install remote-access software such as AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or ScreenConnect.
❌ Log in to your online banking account.
❌ Pay for fake computer repairs.
❌ Buy gift cards or transfer money.
These remote-access programs are legitimate tools—but scammers misuse them to access your computer.
And here’s what makes these scams so believable:
The warning can look VERY real.
🚩 Microsoft logos.
🚩 Fake security warnings.
🚩 Loud alarms.
🚩 Full-screen messages.
🚩 Fake virus scans.
A legitimate Microsoft security warning will not tell you to call a phone number displayed in a threatening pop-up.
If you see one:
✅ Don’t call the number.
✅ Don’t click anything inside the warning.
✅ Don’t install software at the pop-up’s direction.
✅ Don’t share passwords, verification codes, or payment information.
✅ Close the browser. If it won’t close, shut down the computer.
Already called or gave someone remote access?
🛑 Disconnect the computer from the internet immediately.
🛑 Shut it down if you cannot disconnect it.
🛑 Have it checked by a trusted technician before using it again.
💡 Scammers use fear and urgency to pressure you into acting before you can verify what’s happening.
Take a breath.
Stop.
Verify.
Get it checked out.
There’s no shame in asking for help. These scams are designed to fool people.
