Fly Lines and Fletchings

Fly Lines and Fletchings This is a personal blog of hunting and fly fishing escapades, through the eyes of some dedicated people, and an iPhone lens.

This page started out as an extra credit blog for a college course for our two current admins. Both of our admins are avid hunters and fly fishermen here in western Montana. When we aren't sitting in a tree stand, bugling for elk, or fly fishing, you will find us at school; wishing we were doing those things. We strive to provide the best content western Montana can offer with our phone camera's a

nd the occasional digital one. Through this blog we hope that you, the viewer, can truly see why we love to hunt and fish.

My 2016 Election Day archery whitetail. After missing him with my longbow I decided to put down the struggle stick and get serious, get the out the Hoyt. He only went 50 yards and piled up. Special thanks to Brett Goodsell Terra VanOverbeck and Jeremy Jessop for helping drag him out.

If you think trapping is all these activists will stop at think again. These are the anti hunter extremists we are up against, and these people will stop at nothing to end hunting and trapping on OUR public land in Montana.

We urge all of you to go vote on November 8th. At this point, with I-177 becoming a very real possibility, you should go out and vote NO on I-177 to ensure that we all have the possibility to access and HUNT on OUR public lands.

It’s a weird, rough time out there. On the one hand, we’ve got politicians trying to sell off our public lands to the highest bidder. And now, in Montana, we’ve got a group of act…

The treestand is set up, a buck bigger than the one I shot last year has been spotted, and my decision has been made to sit in the nose bleed section this Saturday. -Dan

The switch to traditional has been a long time coming. With an elk down with a compound, it's time to start killing whitetails with the struggle stick.

The whitetail rut is right around the corner and we here at Fly Lines and Fletchings are already dreaming of big river bottom bucks chasing does.

As Tom Rosenbauer of Orvis Fly Fishing puts it, for some of us, the right to hunt or fish is as important as the right to vote or to free speech.

I would like to tell our followers my experience with the Rage SS broadheads. As most of our followers know, I had recently taken my second archery elk. What many of you don't know is the broadhead i used to harvest her. I used a Rage SS broadhead and it pe*****ted completely through her at 30 yards. Rage SS broadheads are supposed to pe*****te better than the original Rage Broadheads because of their smaller cutting diameter, and allowing for greater pe*******on on thicker skinned game like elk; while the shock collar on it allows it to stay intact in your quiver. THEY DID PE*****TE.

However, she did not bleed and even though she had only gone about 70-80 yards and piled up, the she did not expire right away as an ethical bow-hunter would like. The broadhead did its job in the pe*******on sense, but as far as cutting it was sub-par. The exit wound was much smaller than the cutting diameter of the fully deployed broadhead. It was as if the broadhead had rolled through her rather than cutting. This made for tough blood trailing and at one point I had thought I lost her. The blood trail had completely stopped after 30 yards of very sparse drops of blood. Luckily I did find her up on a bench after doing wide circles after the last drop of blood.

Edit: This may have been an isolated incident and with another shot, the broadheads might perform better than initially thought. But, because of this I will not be shooting mechanicals at elk again.

Macklemore wishes he could pop tags as good as the Fly Lines and Fletchings crew. 📸 Trevor Jessop

Dan snuck up on a group of cows (no bulls unfortunately) and gave this cow the Gold Tip treatment. After an hour of waiting, and another hour of blood trailing, Dan found the cow and she had still not expired, even after a complete double lung pass through. They are TOUGH animals. A knife solved this issue and Dan's 2016 Archery season ended in success.

Its an almost good and bad feeling when you finally harvest an elk with your bow. Bad because the season is over, but good because you accomplished what you set out to do.

When your truck smells like a cow in heat despite how many times you've washed your gear. Thanks hunting season.
