Open Wireless

Open Wireless Internet as it Should Be -- Fast. Reliable. Accessible. No hidden fees. No BS.

To our customers:

We’re aware that some accounts were charged for June’s internet service, and we’ve shut down our billing system as of this afternoon to prevent any further charges. Our intention is to issue full refunds for June, as service was only active for a few days at the start of the month.

That said, we’ll need to liquidate remaining assets to generate the necessary funds for these refunds. This process will take some time, but making our customers whole is a priority for us.

We’ll continue to post updates here as they become available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Dear Open Wireless Customers,

It is with a heavy heart that we share some difficult news. On Wednesday, June 4th, our primary licensed 11GHz backhaul radio—responsible for delivering internet connectivity to our entire network—was damaged by undetermined environmental factors (lightning, power surge, or both). The resulting damage has rendered this critical piece of equipment completely inoperable.

As soon as conditions allowed, our team thoroughly investigated the equipment and supporting infrastructure. Unfortunately, we discovered that the extent of the damage is severe, and restoring service would require a level of cost, resources, and time that is beyond what we can realistically deliver.

While we’ve worked hard to overcome many challenges in the past, this event has forced us to make the incredibly difficult decision to wind down operations and shut down the Open Wireless network, effective immediately.

Why We’re Closing

We founded Open Wireless in 2021, in the wake of the pandemic, because we recognized how vital reliable internet access had become—especially in rural and underserved areas of Florida. Our mission was simple but important: bridge the digital divide. And with your support, we built a high-speed, fixed-wireless network that connected many households across Groveland and Clermont.

Running a small, independent internet service provider in a changing and competitive landscape has never been easy. Over the past few years, we’ve weathered storms—literally and figuratively. We’ve dealt with power instability, equipment failures, and other growing pains, but we always pushed forward to improve and restore service whenever we could.

At the same time, the market evolved quickly. Large providers like Spectrum expanded aggressively, offering fiber-based services with subsidized government funding through programs like RDOF, BOP, CPF, and BEAD. Starlink made major strides in rural broadband access by investing billions in satellite infrastructure. Competing against providers with national reach, massive resources, and cutting-edge infrastructure became increasingly difficult.

Despite these headwinds, we remained committed to serving you—our neighbors—with the highest quality service possible. But the damage from this recent storm was the final blow we couldn’t recover from.

What Happens Next

We understand this is a disruption, and we’re doing everything possible to support you during the transition to a new provider. To assist you, we’ve put together a Resource Guide for Groveland and Clermont that includes how to determine which providers are available at your address, a comparison of internet technologies, and what to expect from each.

Thank You

We want to express our deepest gratitude for your trust, patience, and support over the years. While we didn’t always get it right, your feedback, encouragement, and loyalty kept us going—and made this journey worthwhile.

We’re proud of what we accomplished together. We built something meaningful during a time when our communities needed it most. And for that, we’ll always be thankful.

With sincere appreciation,

The Open Wireless Team

6/4 10:30PM. After onsite troubleshooting and inspection, we determined that our primary backhaul radio became inoperable during today's storm. It's unclear precisely what the root cause was, but we must replace the radio to restore customer connectivity, which is not a quick or straightforward process. Our team is internally discussing how to address the damage and restore connectivity.

03/18/2025

We've been experiencing power-related network issues since 8:57AM this morning. We appear to have this temporaily resolved. If you're still without internet, please unplug your Wi-Fi Pods, wait 15 seconds, plug back in, and wait about 3-5 minutes for reconnection. If you're still having issues, text us at 352-632-9434. Thank you!

12:10: We are having issues with our upstream fiber provider. We are troubleshooting and will have updates shortly.

10/16/2024

2:10 PM - Internet service should be restored momentarily. However, we are still experiencing intermittent issues with our point-to-point wireless link, which was damaged by Hurricane Milton. Our repair plans are already in place, but completing them will require multiple tower climbs that cannot occur until next week. While we are doing everything possible to maintain network stability, additional interruptions may occur before the repairs are fully completed. We’ll email you this evening with more detailed information and next steps. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to restore stable service!

1:05 PM: We’re investigating another network interruption. We have not determined the root cause at this time, and will have more updates shortly. Thank you.

10/12/2024

Earlier this week, hurricane-force winds disrupted the optimal alignment of our primary backhaul link. Tomorrow morning, our team will conduct a tower climb to realign the licensed backhaul, which supports all of our current internet customers. While the network remains operational, you may experience higher latency or occasional packet loss until the alignment is restored by tomorrow afternoon. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out via text. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to recover from the storm!

10/12/2024

3:00 PM — New battery backups have been installed and appear operational. This should alleviate issues when our Groveland site transitions from grid to generator power. If you have power, but don’t have internet, please power cycle your equipment. After five minutes, if connectivity isn’t restored, please text us for support. Thank you!

10/12/2024

9:40 AM—We’re experiencing further power issues at our Groveland Tower site. Our team will be on site this afternoon to begin troubleshooting and, if necessary, repairs.
