Not all insurance companies treat fire department response costs the same way.

supports communities and reimburses community fire departments for responding to incidents involving property that they insure.

Those reimbursements help keep fire staff trained, and supplies and equipment stocked for the next person who needs assistance.

Thanks, for being a responsible player ..and for recognizing that when the fire department is supported, we are all supported (including GEICO!).

Taxes are for community coverage; insurance is for individual coverage.

What does believe should happen when a fire department responds to a crash caused by its insured driver?

In a letter denying one South Carolina department’s $1,044 invoice, Progressive argued that “the cost of public safety services should be borne by the public as a whole.”

produces the same canned response in hundreds of denied claims for property damage response by the fire department.

Taxpayers already pay to keep emergency services ready for everyone. When response is needed for insured property, insurance should reimburse the community for mitigating the hazards of the property which is covered by that insurance.

Taxes are for community coverage; insurance is for individual coverage.

Only 3.7% of reported fire department responses in 2024 were fires. EMS and rescue accounted for 65.1%, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Fire departments respond to much more than fires. Taxes keep them ready to help everyone. But when they respond to an individual insured incident, insurance should reimburse the community so that emergency services are ready for the next person.

Who is responsible for sustaining the fire service? I explore that question in FireAlly’s new article:

Who is responsible for sustaining the fire service?

Taxpayers fund the readiness that keeps fire departments prepared for everyone. But when a specific insured event uses public resources, those costs should not simply disappear into the local budget.

Our new article looks at what rising costs, insurance claims, and systems thinking reveal about the safety net we all rely on.

September 11 is not a story that ended 25 years ago.

Today, we remember those killed that day, those lost in the years since, and those still living with its consequences.

Firefighters responded. Apparatus was deployed. Rescue equipment and first aid were provided. Roadway hazards were contained, debris was cleared, and the roadway was made safe again.

These resources exist because a community maintains them - for every person and every emergency.

After this individual insurable event, State Farm reimbursed the full $3934 to the fire department so the community resources are there for the next emergency.

We recognize State Farm as a responsible community partner.

When ensures and the fire service work together, communities are stronger.

YOUR DEPARTMENT ALREADY DID THE WORK.
COULD SOME OF THOSE COSTS BE RECOVERED?

Every serious roadway incident consumes department resources: personnel time, apparatus, equipment, absorbents, medical supplies, and administrative capacity.

FireAlly helps authorized fire departments identify eligible incidents and pursue reimbursement through applicable insurance mechanisms—without billing residents.

We manage the process from incident submission through follow-up:

• Review incident documentation
• Identify potentially eligible responses
• Prepare and submit reimbursement requests
• Communicate with insurance carriers
• Track outstanding matters
• Report status and results back to the department

There is no upfront program cost. FireAlly’s fee is based on funds successfully recovered.

THE COST BEHIND THE RESPONSE

After a serious crash, firefighters rescue occupants, stabilize vehicles, contain hazards, protect surrounding property, and make the roadway safe again.

That response requires specialized personnel, equipment, supplies, and time. Yet those costs are usually absorbed by the same local budget that must also prepare for fires, storms, hazardous-material incidents, and other community-wide emergencies.

Public-safety funding should evolve with the system it supports. When a discrete incident has another responsible funding source, communities should be able to preserve shared public resources for shared risks.

FireAlly is building a more sustainable approach to fire-service funding.
