"It's ALWAYS DNS!" It's kind of a techy inside joke, but it always seems to be DNS... Yesterday a customer had an issue accessing anything on the Internet. Was it their Internet Service Provider, their firewall, their network, computers, what could it be? I first had them check their equipment, their Fiber ONT, their Firewall, their network devices, etc... just to make sure everything had power, no cable disconnected and all indicator lights on their ONT and firewall were green/normal. Everything checked out.

I had my suspicions at this point, but my next call was to the ISP. Is there a general outage in the area? No. Is there a problem with their equipment? No. They can connect to the Fiber ONT. The only thing their tech support said was they couldn't reach the firewall, maybe there is a problem there. Oh wait a second... the tech told me that their was some issue with billing and there is a pending disconnect! What??? So he transferred me to billing department. So there was a previous problem, their CC had expired in May and so their May and June invoices had not been paid at the beginning of the month via the autopay, but according to the billing dept it had been corrected around mid June. So there is no problem with the account. Why then is tech support saying there is a "pending" disconnect??? Did some unknown guy in a back closet, that nobody knows about and nobody knows what he does flip a switch??? The Billing dept promised they would fix the problem and have the internet back online within the hour. AHhh... Great! Problem solved or so I thought so. I contacted the customer and told them what was happening and that their internet would be back online within the hour.

4 hours later ... I get a text message. "Our internet still isn't working, how long should we wait?" WHAT?!?!?!?!?!? Why didn't you call me 3 hours ago? So now I know for sure there is something else wrong. I rushed to the customer site and connected to their firewall and checked the settings. All looked normal. I was able to get on the internet, no problem, but they still couldn't. Next thing I did was run a ping test to an IP address (I should have had them do this 4 hours ago). Sure enough it's working, but I can't ping a domain name. Now I know its DNS!!! I checked the DNS settings from the ISP in the firewall and tested them. They are online but not resolving anything. I changed them to some publicly available DNS servers through Cloudflare and Google and sure enough everything is now working!!!

Next, I called the ISP and asked them what their DNS addresses were supposed to be. He told me and confirmed those are what I have. "Do you know why they're not working?" I asked. The tech wasn't sure and he put me on hold to check something and came back. "We made some changes today and updated our DNS servers. Those addresses you have, have been deprecated, the new DNS addresses are..." WHAT?!?!?!?! Why wasn't I notified? I searched the email, nothing, there was nothing from the ISP regarding any upcoming changes to their DNS servers... The tech said, "Sorry, a notice should have been sent out..."

I usually never rely on the ISP's DNS and typically always use the public Cloudflare DNS or OpenDNS. For this customer I used the ISP DNS because it is a small office and this was a local ISP. I didn't need to filter anything. I should have known better. Just remember... It's ALWAYS DNS!!! 😉

Weekly I get calls from customers that have been scammed. Their computers have been compromised, their banks accounts have been robbed. Mainly they prey on older folks who are just too trusting when it comes to their computers and emails and who they're talking to. Its time for PAYBACK! If you think your data is secure in the Microsoft Cloud, … think again. This article goes deep into what is not being stated by Microsoft about its security of data in transit which leaves a lot of unanswered security questions by the Federal Govt. One of the things this article reiterates is that after being exposed, Microsoft stopped using Chinese based contractors for support of its U.S. Dept of Defense cloud servers. It still uses Chinese based contractors for support of other Govt and private servers.

One Microsoft product was approved despite years of concerns about its security.

SCAM ALERT!

Do you have small business in the State of Indiana? BEWARE of SCAM's like this. Every two years you have to file a Business Entity Report with the State of Indiana thru their INBiz website. However, these SCAMMERs will send you emails like this a few months ahead of your time to file your Business Entity Report. It looks official and even has a link to to a website that pulls up your Publicly available information (Thanks but NO THANKS to the IN.gov) from the State website. The link takes you to a website named:

When you click on this link, it will pull up your Indiana Business Entity which further makes it appear to be "Official".

That's right the government provides your information to SCAMMERS! The State charges you $32 to file your Indiana Business Report online, but this site will charge you an extra $100.

Check the INBiz website yourself to find out and update your business info at https://inbiz.in.gov/BOS/PublicSearch/Search

Delete these emails and/or contact the Secretary of State directly to verify your information.
