So this came into the shop this morning.

Ever seen those too-good-to-be-true cheap 2TB drives on Amazon? This is that. The client explained that it had stopped working, and that the port wasn't connecting. I was curious and looked up the part number on the storage chip - sure enough, top results all mention known scams and the first result is a YouTube video on the subject (Google "PF709PG to see for yourself).

As you can see, it's a cheap glue job to put the parts in the case. The flash drive is maybe 64GB, but it gets custom or modded firmware on it to bypass the write limits. It tricks the drive into overwriting itself constantly, while reporting larger capacity than it actually has. It's a dirty trick to dump a lot of cheap storage for a cash grab. By the time you realize you've been scammed, you data is already gone. It's either partially or totally overwritten, or the cheap flash storage has simply worn out from the usage.

Friends, please be wary when you find what looks like a deal online, these scammers are everywhere. They're not hard to spot if you know what you're looking for. Our best advice here is to buy quality (we stock Kingston flash drives). Buy trusted brands. And always keep more than one backup.

Hi folks, wanted to take a second since there appears to be a bit of confusion. We are not accepting offers for used/secondhand equipment. Not sure where that idea came from, as we've never done that. Yes, we offer recertified equipment, but that isn't random purchases, those come from a leasing company auction with a tight chain of custody and a strict vetting process. We know exactly where these machines have been and have a solid relationship with the vendor, enabling us to offer fantastic deals on business-class equipment.
