We’re all asking the same question of brands:

Is there anything out there that’s JUST FOR ME?

We want to feel like we can own our brands. Like they’re a piece of our identity or reflect our identity.

So as I approach branding and rebranding conversations, that’s where my focus has shifted towards. How do we make the exact right thing for a very specific person?

We see brands thrive in saturated markets because they’ve discovered how to be the exact right thing for a very small portion of that market, rather than trying to appeal to the whole thing.

I’m not saying that minimalizing something fun is the answer, It’s a question of differentiating.

If every car show had simple, minimal elements like our rebranded version, I’d say pull out the airbrush and lean into something fun.

The issue isn’t that something looks bad and the redesign looks good, it’s that everyone is using one style, and there’s an opportunity in using a completely different style.

[Cruise the Rogue | Branding / Visual Identity Design]

Cruise the Rogue is a celebration of 15+ years of car culture in the Rogue Valley. Four days of show & shine exhibitions, scenic poker runs through applegate valley w**e country, live concerts, a saturday evening cruise through downtown, and a VIP dinner with special guests Richard Rawlings of Gas Monkey Garage and Dennis Collins

It’s not often that I get to work on a project I’m this excited about in my hometown. The Rogue Valley is a hub for automotive culture and has been home to hundreds of incredible car shows for decades now. Cruise the Rogue builds on every bit of that heritage.

For years though, our car shows have largely adopted the same look. Large bubbly lettering, airbrush-style gradients, bevels, and drop shadows.

With Cruise the Rogue, we went an entirely different direction. We built on the heritage by maturing it into something simpler and more restrained. The identity leans on a nostalgic script typeface, paired with an editorial condensed type to achieve a novelty feel.

The result is a scalable identity system that Cruise the Rogue can continue to build on for its annual events far into the future.

Will share more, especially as we approach the actual event in a week and a half.

Enjoy! 🫡

If we’re not careful, we’ll look at the creative process and see a process of addition.

Adding elements together until we like the thing enough to call it a product. I’d argue that the creative process is the process of subtraction. Of removing all but what is absolutely necessary for accomplishing a specific objective.

At my first job, a Grammy-winning sound engineer taught me a lesson that captures this perfectly. He explained that when you’re working with sound, especially cleaning up dialogue, the goal isn’t to boost the good frequencies. It’s to work like a sculptor: find the frequencies that detract from the good audio and chisel them away, until all that remains is what works.

Creativity is the same. Your job is to take a thousand inputs and carve them down until only what serves the piece is left.

When I, as a creative, work subtractively, the quality of my work significantly improves because my decisions actually mean something.

Also who’s gonna win Argentina v Spain?
