Gone are the days of bulky ankle monitors. Many of you may not be familiar with these devices, so let me explain. Last year, courts in Tennessee ordered that anyone released on bond with aggravated charges must wear a GPS tracking device.
This change was specifically implemented for aggravated domestic violence cases. This compact device, similar in size to a Fitbit, is paired via Bluetooth to the defendant's phone and displays a restricted radius that the defendant must maintain from the victim. It has been shown to decrease the likelihood of the defendant re-harming the victim.
The victim also has the option to access the app to track the defendant's movements. The police can be alerted by the victim and the company can also notify the authorities. This system allows for multiple parties to hold the defendant accountable and track their movements.
If the defendant violates the restricted radius, their bond is revoked, and they are returned to jail. Additionally, the device monitors alcohol consumption, and defendants are required to complete daily photo check-ins on the app, which includes a facial recognition feature with the bracelet. The band is also fiber-optic to prevent tampering.
