Someone in another country is probably trying to log in to a Microsoft 365 account right now.

The only question is whether yours is one of them.

Most firms don't need employees signing in from dozens of countries around the world. Yet many Microsoft 365 environments are configured to allow login attempts from virtually anywhere.

That's an unnecessary risk.

With Conditional Access, you can restrict access to the countries where your firm actually operates. If a stolen password is tested from a location you've blocked, the attempt fails immediately.

No security control is foolproof.

Law firms: phishing attacks aren't just happening through email anymore.

Cybercriminals are increasingly using Microsoft Teams to impersonate colleagues, executives, vendors, and other trusted contacts.

The goal?

To trick employees into: ✔ Sharing sensitive information
✔ Opening malicious files
✔ Updating payment details
✔ Providing login credentials

For law firms, even a single successful attack can have serious consequences, from compromised client information to trust account fraud and business disruption.

As a lawyer, you probably aren't spending your day thinking about who can install software on their computer. And you shouldn't have to.

You're focused on your clients, your cases, your deadlines, and the countless responsibilities that come with running a law firm.

💭But here's a question worth asking: Can everyone in your firm install software or change security settings on their computer? If the answer is yes, your firm may be carrying more risk than necessary.

When a user has those permissions, malicious software often does too if that device is compromised. That can make it easier for an attack to disable security protections, install unwanted software, or gain a deeper foothold in your environment.

The good news? 🤠

For most attorneys and legal staff, removing those permissions doesn't change how they work day to day. Email still works. Documents open normally. Your practice management system runs as expected.

The only real difference is that software installations and system changes go through IT first.

That's not about making life more difficult.

It's about protecting client information, reducing risk, and helping your firm avoid problems that could have been prevented.

One question I encourage every law firm to ask their IT provider:

"Who in our firm can install software or make changes to security settings?"

The answer is often: more people than necessary.

Good cybersecurity isn't always about adding another tool. Sometimes it's about limiting access to only what's needed.

Small change. Meaningful reduction in risk.
