Ray “Duck” Atkins (February 19, 1927 - February 1, 1997) was an influential American country and bluegrass Dobro (resophonic guitar) player and radio/TV personality. Born in Erwin, Tennessee, he became known for his pioneering instrumental style and his entertaining stage persona.
Atkins joined Carl Story’s Rambling Mountaineers in 1942, after winning a local talent contest, performing on WNOX in Knoxville. Atkins played with Johnnie and Jack’s Tennessee Mountain Boys during the late 1940s and early 1951 on major programs like the Grand Ole Opry (WSM), notably featured on their hit recording of “Poison Love”. Atkins joined Arthur Smith and the Crackerjacks around 1958 for daily television appearances on WBTV in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Nickname “Duck” came from Atkins doing live Donald Duck voice impersonations. He incorporated a popular comedy and musical routine featuring a duck puppet named “Quackerjack” alongside his wife Lois. In his later years, Atkins transitioned into radio broadcasting as a disc jockey and later became part-owner and manager of radio station WIXE in Monroe, North Carolina.
Ray Atkins recorded this retrospective album, Early Dobro Stylings in 1982 for the Old Homestead label. The album serves as a showcase of Atkins’ traditional, pioneering style of playing the Dobro. This record is comprised of foundational country standards, fast-paced bluegrass breakdowns, and personal callbacks to his active touring years. Are you a fan of Bluegrass and Country?
