After 47 years of faithfully caring for the teeth and souls of his community, my dad, Tim G. “Painless” Peffly, D.D.S. just retired. It has been a joy over the last couple of weeks to see patients say goodbye as they tearfully thank him for not only being so gentle but also for listening, caring, and praying with them through decades. I’m so proud of the life he’s lived, the career he’s had, the impact he’s made on so many.

Here are just a few things I’ve learned from him as I’ve watched him build a business and a legacy over almost half a century:
•Your primary task is not dentistry/making software/renting chairs/fill-in-the-blank. Your primary job is loving people. Always.
•Pursue excellence even when it costs you money, time, sweat, or all of the above.
•Nothing is beneath you.
•Little things add up and make a big difference.
•There are a lot of things you can’t control but you can continue to be faithful.

I can only hope that I will build a business that blesses people half as much and close to as deeply as my father before me.

May we all put others before ourselves as much as he has.

All of the above actually happened in the 23+ years I’ve been in the events industry. I’ve got some crazy stories. 😬

But the craziest really is how hard it is to make money in this industry. It doesn’t matter how creative you are, how talented you are, or how hard you work. You can be the very best at your craft but still not build a profitable business that lasts through the years.

Why? Because this is a hard industry. We don’t get do overs. We don’t get second chances. We don’t have a lot of margin. So we have to get it right.

That is difficult and expensive and exhausting.

Honestly, that’s the whole reason we created RW Elephant. We saw TONS of incredibly creative talented rental pros who were creating beauty in the world but were struggling to make a profit. We exist to help you manage the backend of your rental business with ease so you can have a repeatable, scalable, dependable system that supports you as you do the parts of this crazy work that you truly love— the creativity.
