Cybersecurity Awareness Month is here. It's a good time to check what you actually know about security against what you only think you know.
Some security advice gets repeated so often it starts to sound like fact. Outdated assumptions create blind spots, and blind spots are exactly what cyber criminals look for.
Here are 6 myths small business owners still believe:
▪️ "We're too small to be a target." Hackers pick targets based on opportunity, not size.
▪️"Our team will spot a fraudulent email." AI-written scams are polished, personalized, and hard to catch from the text alone.
▪️"MFA fully protects our accounts." Prompt bombing floods phones with login requests until someone taps "approve" just to make it stop. MFA works best as one layer of a bigger strategy.
▪️"Our backups have us covered." Having a backup doesn't mean you can recover. If you've never tested it, you can't count on it.
▪️"Security is IT's job." One bad click from any department can open the door.
▪️"We know what to do if something happens." If nobody knows who calls IT or who talks to customers, the plan is still missing. Your recovery plan shouldn't debut during an incident.
Myths feel comfortable. They let you believe you're covered without digging deeper.
