One of the things I miss from back east is the Italian festival.
One thing from the festival that I miss is how I would see everyone I knew, even people who had moved away would return just for those festivals.
Those festivals would celebrate some saint and for about a week or so there would be music, games and food. Lots and lots of food. One that I love is called a zeppole. It’s just a big ball of dough that’s deep fried then covered in powdered sugar. When you get the bag with either 6 or 13(bakers dozen) you would have to shake it to make sure the sugar coated each and every piece and you had to make sure it happened while the zeppole was still hot so it can stick or you would just end up with a big lump of greasy tasting sugar. 😂
The bag would get that greasy look to it, powdered sugar would get all over your face and clothes but you didn’t mind because when you took one bite of that hot fried dough ball covered in sugar, you were in pure bliss even if just for a minute. You didn’t even care if you happened to burn your lips or tongue on some of the hot grease that happened to ooze out when you bit it.
The only thing that was best with having a zeppole is enjoying it while in the company of friends or family.
And water, plenary of water. 😂
The festival of St. Ann’s had the best zeppoles anywhere. I don’t know what those women put into that batter but whatever it was made them taste great!!!
Yeah, that’s one of the things I miss from back home.
So, If you’re ever in the east coast and happen upon an Italian festival make sure to get yourself some zeppoles.
You won’t regret it.
Just thought I’d share this with you.
