Hard drives are extremely fragile devices whether they are inside the computer or inside an external enclosure like portable USB or Firewire drives.
Extreme caution should be exercised when moving computers or carrying portable external drives. For computer transportation, try to use the original box or briefcase for laptops. If not available, any box large enough, with some padding around it like clothes or blankets. For external hard drives, bubble wrap is recommended.

A very popular external drive in the market today is Western Digital My passport series. The drive has a built in USB connector. A common problem is when the computer is not able to recognize the drive anymore due to a broken or bad USB connection. If your computer randomly recognizes the drive, you should try to back up your most important files immediately. This will work for a few files but what happens if you have 100GB of data or more? The connection may not last long enough to save your files. If this is the case, data recovery will be required to retrieve all your files.

If your Mac is taking forever to start or your PC is warning you to backup and replace your hard drive, this could be an indication that your hard drive has bad sectors. A bad sector is a portion of storage on your hard drive that is no longer responding. Natural wear or physical damage can cause a bad sector.
Hard drives in this condition will require to be replaced in your computer and data recovery services to retrieve your files.

Clicking Hard Drives:
If you dropped your external drive or are hearing clicking or weird sounds coming from your PC or Mac, turn it off immediately to increase chances of recovery. The picture below shows what could happen if the drive is left clicking too long causing the head to crash and physically damaging the surface which will make it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for your data to be recovered.
