So 2 weeks ago one of the garage door springs went "wham-sproing!" and it needed to be replaced. Had to replace both of them. What does this have to do with this page? Well, in the course of having the door fixed I spoke with the technician and he told me I could upgrade my opener to be web-enabled. In other words, access the garage door opener via the web or a smartphone. Nah, it can't be that easy, can it? Yup... I was amazed.
I ordered, on Amazon, a Chamberlain CIGCWC Internet/Smartphone Connectivity Kit.
http://www.amazon.com/Chamberlain-CIGCWC-Internet-Smartphone-Connectivity/dp/B00C1CF1S6/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1382023043&sr=8-8&keywords=chamberlain
As usual per Amazon, it showed up quickly. I removed the old worn-out wall control, and hooked up the new one. I used the same wires that connected to the old wall control, no need to replace them unless you really want to. It's "smart", so it takes a few seconds to learn what opener motor it's connected to, then the pilot light illuminates and it's ready to go.
The other half of the kit (Internet Gateway) connects to your router (if you only have a cable modem or equivalent you need to add a router, more on that later). Wait for the lights to illuminate. Go to Chamberlain's website and create an account (your email address and a easy to remember and type on your smartphone, but not TOO easy). Log in, and set up the Gateway. Follow the instructions. By the way, the instructions are clearly written and easy to follow. Once the device is set up, on your computer, you can now open and close your garage door!
Download the app for your smartphone. Log in the same as the website (this is why it's a good idea to make a somewhat easy password, although not TOO easy, since it's your garage door...)
Log in to the app, and it will tell you how whether or not the door is open, how long it's been that way, and you can open or close the door from your phone. You can also set up alerts on the website to tell you if the door is open. Also, the wall control will automatically close the door if it's open for a predetermined time (1, 5, or 10 minutes). I really like this. It's easy to set up, inexpensive, and the peace of mind is priceless.
Monitor and control your garage door from anywhere with your smartphone, tablet or connected device. Receive open garage door alerts to your smartphone.
