2,830 Texas drilling permits in six months, seen from above.

60% landed in the Permian Basin, and Midland County alone had 215. Exxon Mobil, Diamondback E&P, OXY USA, ConocoPhillips and EOG Resources had the most approvals.

Approved permits are lagging indicators. Pre-permits are the front edge of the development pipeline: the earliest available signal of an operator's development intentions in a specific area.

288 drilling permits were filed across Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma in the last two weeks. Here's where they landed.

Texas: 139 (49 still pending approval)
New Mexico: 109
Oklahoma: 40

About 7 in 10 are in the Permian Basin, and just over half are in three counties: Eddy, NM (62), Lea, NM (44) and Martin, TX (40).

ConocoPhillips: 35
Mewbourne Oil: 29
ExxonMobil: 23
Kaiser-Francis Oil: 18
DE V Operating: 14
Devon Energy: 14

298 rigs are running in the Permian Basin today, 49% of the 613 rigs Energy Domain Fundamentals tracks across the U.S.

Where they are:
• Texas 206, New Mexico 92
• Lea County, NM leads with 51, followed by Eddy (41), Midland (38), Reeves (32) and Loving (21)
• Those five counties hold 183 rigs, 61% of the basin
• 291 of the 298 are drilling horizontal wells

Who's running them: ExxonMobil (39), Oxy (23), Diamondback (21), ConocoPhillips (19) and Devon (19).
