Post #3: class restrictions (speaker counts, etc)

Here is the list for classes that I believe is fair for all.
Also know that I dont care if there are any changes in any of the classes. Anyone that says that I lobby for change because it benefits me as a shop owner is wrong. Most of the competetive slings that I build come in every offseason for upgrades to remain competitive or because they have an idea that will make their sling better. I.E. they are coming in and making changes anyway. Name me a sling that has been competing for a few years that hasnt upgraded every year. If you believe they do that just because of rule changes you are naΓ―ve at best. Not throwing shade, just an example...did Black Mamba rebuild to current build because of rule changes???

Classes are as follows:

Flyweight- 8) speakers and 2) sub. This is an entry level/beginner class designed to get anyone in the ring. Speakers can be 6.5" or 8"
and sub can be 8" or 10". This class is open for the daily rider to settle the grudge with his buddy about who has the better sound. Once you have won this class twice, you have to compete in the appropriate higher class in the future.

Featherweight- 8) 6.5" speakers 1) 10"sub.

Lightweight- 8) 8" speakers 2) 10" subs or 4)smaller subs (i.e. 6'5" or 8")

Welterweight- 12) 10" speakers 2)12" subs or 4) smaller subs

Middleweight- 18) 12" speakers 2) 15" subs or 4) smaller subs

Heavyweight- run what you brung. Only limits are no trailers, etc

Extreme-doesnt exist.....RIP!

As a heavyweight owner, I will play my sling against anyone anytime and genuinely dont care about winning or losing. its more about getting to show off at the time.
These rules also go along with a few definitions and should answer the complaints about extra subs in fenderpods, etc. Lets kill the debate on midbass vs sub right here. A midbass has a pleated surround and a sub has a rolled surround. True midbass is a tight, punchy sound that is best reproduced with a restricted suspension on the speaker. if the speaker has a rolled surround, it is designed to reproduce sub bass sound, sacrificing the ability to accurately reproduce midbass and midrange. This alteration in definition makes it very easy to identify the 2 different types and count them accordingly in inspection.

Changes to sub counts should also help stop the arguement about having subs in the fender pods or shoulder pods. Just use the appropriate style of speakers and its good. Having the ability to use multiple subs of a smaller size will help in the creativity in the builds and maybe add a breath of fresh air on ideas. Diversity in build style should only help the community. Before anybody looses their mind over the suggestion, the bike community has been using this variation for years. (2-10" or 4-8" as an example)

Expect this post to be the most argued debate, with the judging criteria/style being also heavily debated. That post will come tomorrow.

Thank you

Lets quickly cover the forgotten topic: What is a shop bike???

Another easy topic for me. A shop bike is any bike built by the owner of a shop for themself or their significant other or immediate family( son, daughter, grandkids, etc). And yes, a girlfriend or fiance is a significant other. Any person that does installs for other people for income is a shop. Whether that is in a brick and mortar building, your garage, your driveway, or your buddies house. If you are getting paid more than dinner or a case of beer, you are a shop.
Lets face it....this community isnt big enough to exclude shop bikes from the competition. hopefully one day we can have Pro and Comp classes, but not now. As a shop owner, i build my bike (and my wifes soon) to go to competition to show off what is possible, but I have never cared about winning and losing. The 5 minutes I get in the ring gets me all the satisfaction I need, knowing all the attention is on my sling at that time.

Ultimately, in my opinion, there are very few shop bikes. The list as I see it is as follows (feel free to add or question and I will give my opinion on them)
1)mad scientist(me) 2)snow 3)lemon drop 4)lemon crush 5)game over 6)lil chris 7) lil Jose 8) lime squeeze 9) animal (if it still exists?!?) 10)jose middleweight from lite em up 11) goliath 12)sunshine 13)showoff (geo's bike in cali)

There are probably others that I forgot, but I believe that is a pretty inclusive list. Everyone else pays their money and gets their results accordingly.

As a sidenote, my son is building a sling that I have told him I am not helping with. Because I am not helping, I dont consider him a shop bike, but could easily be swayed to the other side. Please give me your opinion on this also.

Thanks again

Lets address topic #1: size restrictions in different classes (mini stretch, box restrictions, Etc)

Let me open this by saying that 2 years ago a group of us had a zoom call to cover this whole topic. At that time, I was in favor of size restrictions. After being around the community for a few more years and hearing comments both good and bad each way, I have changed my mind. All slingshots are a vision created by the owner and they should have the ability to create whatever is in their head and put it out there. Also, with the number of people that have builds in a class currently that would get displaced, I feel it would be unfair to ask them to completely change just to fit in. The argument that a stretch has the advantage in the smaller classes is only true if this is strictly a bass competition. If audio comps are judged correctly(overall sound quality, dynamics, clarity, bass/midbass, presentation, etc) bass is only one aspect of the overall result. The judging getting corrected(future post) should eliminate most all concerns in this area. Too much bass is as detrimental to a quality sound as not having enough. When you cant hear the background instrumentals and transitions because the bass is too dominant or the vocal are screaming over them, that is not good sound and should be judged accordingly. Build yourself a bass monster and pimp it in the parking lot, just know it (the bass) probably should be turned down when you pull in the ring.

In conclusion, my opinion is: build what you want.

Well, lets see if we can open a can of worms or two. I am going to make a few posts on here in the hopes of getting some clarity and unification in the slingshot audio game. This post is to just clarify what I hope the posts can accomplish and to let everyone know that they are coming and to tell anyone that wants to put their 2 cents in, where to find them and chime in. The only requests that I have on comments is 1) stay on topic to that post, other concerns will be addressed on other posts. 2) dont get butthurt when someone disagrees with you, its NOT a personal attack. All things I deem as a personal attack will be REMOVED!!! 3) keep comments to a rebuttal of ideas, meaning examples of why you dont think something will work, and also have a different idea to propose as an alternative. This is KEY. If you are simply shooting down an idea because YOU dont like it, doesnt do anything to help create a solution to the issue at hand.

The different posts that are coming:
1) size restrictions for builds in different classes
2) consistency in judging
3) speaker counts (or class breakdowns)
4) show lineups (what events we hope to see or be able to participate in at the events). This is really up to the different platforms to decide how to run their events, and I will never tell them what they need to do. It is just feedback on what people would like to see and be able to participate in.

Here is the biggest risk for me in all this. My direct cell number(316)841-1995. Any issues with this, call me directly. Dont need this to become a platform for venting. That being said, I do run a business and am not able to answer a call at all times. If I dont answer, send a text and I will get back to you as soon as I am able.

I genuinely hope that we can get some things resolved that everyone in the community (platform owner, competitors, and attendees) can at least agree on and adopt as a unified standard going forward.

Thank you in advance for what I hope is a productive conversation, and all the input.
