Last week, a client asked us: What’s the industry-standard number of IT support staff to overall users?

While there might have been an average ratio in years past, that’s all changed.

Today, we use four metrics to right-size an IT function:

- Quantity of supported devices and workflows
- User activity hours
- Complexity index across supported systems
- Service level expectations

Some businesses can get away with one tech to 1,000 users. For others the best ratio is 1:100. We’ve seen as low as 1:10.

These days, right-sizing IT is almost entirely based on scope instead of user counts.

Sharing a recent project success: We launched a custom AI agent for a client, complete with its own specialized knowledge base.

The client had been curious about a solution that could serve both user training and general IT helpdesk needs.

We knew that a custom AI chatbot could easily solve both problems, as long as it was trained on, and had access to, the company’s standardized procedures and reference library.

In less than a month, we had the agent defined, modeled, trained, validated and deployed.
