The next outbreak could happen without warning. Is your air prepared?
Earlier this month, Russia reported that a 28-year-old researcher died at an anti-plague institute in Siberia. Officials said the cause was “pneumonia of unknown origin” and denied it was plague or a lab accident. The WHO still does not know what pathogen was involved or how she became infected.
Some reports suggest plague bacteria may have been involved, and others say a second employee became sick. These claims have not been confirmed, and Russian authorities have denied them.
No matter what the final explanation is, the lesson remains. The next unknown pathogen will not give advance notice, and it can take days or weeks to get answers when it appears.
