The Mental Health Crisis in Children
The data backs up what I and many others have noticed. Children’s mental health is deteriorating, and screen exposure—particularly from social media—is a leading factor. Here are just a few of the facts:
• Su***de rates for younger teens have increased dramatically: 167% for girls, 91% for boys (in the decade up to 2020).
• Hospitalizations for eating disorders in UK children have increased sixfold.
• Self-harm among teens rose by 500% in the last nine years.
• Myopia (short-sightedness) now affects 1 in 3 children in the UK, and global projections show it could affect 1 billion children by 2050. Excessive screen time and reduced outdoor activity are major causes.
Blue light from screens interferes with developing eyes, disrupts hormones, and damages sleep rhythms—all of which are critical during childhood.
