A backup you have never tested is a hope, not a plan. Ransomware counts on that.

Three quick checks that take an afternoon:
1. Restore one real file from backup and open it. If it fails, your backup failed.
2. Make sure a copy lives somewhere the ransomware can't reach — offline or immutable.
3. Know who does the restoring, and how long it takes. "Somebody in IT" is not a plan.

The businesses that bounce back from an attack are the ones that already practiced. Naptown IT sets up backup and recovery that gets tested, not just installed.

The most dangerous phishing scams don’t look dangerous at all. They look like mail you were expecting.

AI is helping cybercriminals craft messages that sound like they came from someone you trust, whether that’s a vendor, colleague or senior leader. The usual red flags are getting harder to spot.

What should your team watch for?

• Emails impersonating trusted contacts or financial institutions
• Urgent payment or sensitive data requests
• Smishing attacks sent through text messages
• Voice cloning that mimics familiar people
• Spear phishing built around real business details

What’s the most convincing phishing attempt you’ve seen?

Cybersecurity isn’t limited to passwords, software and what happens on a screen.

Sometimes, it’s as simple as who you let through the door.

Tailgating happens when someone enters a restricted area by following an authorized employee inside. It may seem harmless to hold the door for someone, but that small decision could give the wrong person access to your workplace, devices or sensitive information.

That’s why employees are such an important part of your security. Knowing what to watch for, following access procedures and speaking up when something doesn’t seem right makes a real difference.

What’s one security habit every employee should know? Share yours below.

If you use the same password on more than one account, one breach becomes five. That's how most account takeovers start.

The fix is easier than it sounds:
1. Use a password manager so every account gets a long, unique password
2. Turn on passkeys where they're offered: nothing to type into a fake page, nothing to steal
3. Put MFA on email and banking first

Only one strong password to remember, and your logins get simpler, not harder. Naptown IT can roll this out for your whole team.

Phishing works because it looks like ordinary work: a sign-in page, a shared document, an invoice that needs paying.

Before you click, slow down for five seconds:
1. Check the sender's real email address, not just the name
2. Hover over links before you tap them
3. Treat urgency as a red flag ("account locked," "pay now")

When in doubt, don't use the email. Go to the site directly yourself. One careful pause is cheaper than a week of cleanup.

Naptown IT can add filtering and train your team to spot the fakes.

The weakest point in your cybersecurity isn’t always your software. It can be the person who hasn’t been trained to recognize a threat.

That’s why security can’t sit with IT alone. Leadership has to set the tone, employees need to understand their role, and everyone should know what to look for and what to do next.

Turn cybersecurity into a shared responsibility across your business.

Good cybersecurity is a long-term commitment to your business.

The time and resources you put into protecting it today can pay off for years by helping prevent costly disruptions, protect sensitive data and keep your business prepared as threats change.

But that investment needs attention. Technology changes, your business evolves and new risks emerge. Regular reviews, updates and employee education help make sure your protections keep pace.

Cybersecurity isn’t something you set up once and forget. Keep investing in it, and it will keep protecting everything you’ve worked to build.

What’s one cybersecurity investment you’re glad your business made? Tell us below.

Birds don’t fly solo for a reason. The formation helps them stay on course and go farther together.

Cybersecurity works in the same way. Internal IT employees know the business, but they shouldn’t have to cover every security challenge alone.

The right external expertise can bring added specialization, broader visibility and support when threats don’t keep business hours.

Comment “TOGETHER” to schedule a discovery call and see where added support could strengthen your defenses.

Today is Patch Tuesday: Microsoft's monthly security updates are out. These fix the exact flaws attackers scan for, so don't let them sit.

Quick checklist:
1. Install and actually restart (updates finish on reboot)
2. Update your browser and everyday apps too
3. Don't postpone for "later this week"

If managing updates feels like a chore, that's what managed patching is for. Naptown IT patches and verifies client systems so you don't have to think about it.

Myth: “We're too small to experience a cyberattack.”

The reality? Size is exactly what makes small businesses attractive to cybercriminals. Limited defenses and the assumption of safety create a vulnerability that's easy to exploit.

Small doesn't mean invisible. Make sure your security reflects that.
