➡Six types of keyless car theft⬅
1️⃣ Signal Relaying - Keyfobs use a short-range radio signal to unlock or start the vehicle. Thieves use wireless transmitters held up to the door/window of a house to capture and relay the genuine signal to the vehicle.
2️⃣ Signal Jamming - A device jams the radio frequency of key fobs to prevent the vehicle from being locked (parking lot, apartment complex, etc). The thief can now enter the vehicle.
3️⃣ Key Programming - Thieves use the diagnostic port (near the footwell) to boot up a vehicles software and program a blank key fob.
4️⃣ Close range testing - Thieves check door handles, and if the key is close enough, inside the house, it will unlock or start the vehicle.
5️⃣ Code Grabbing - Thieves capture the signal sent by the device (parking lot, etc) and calculates the unlock code. (Little evidence that this is currently being used, but a possible threat).
6️⃣ App Hacking - When a car is connected to the owner's smartphone. New cars allow digital keys to be shared from one smartphone to another. Thieves hack and obtain a digital key. (Also believed to be rarely used, but a possible threat).
