Scammers are becoming more convincing every day — but knowledge is your best defense.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office invites the community to attend our Scam Prevention Class on Monday, June 1st, 2026, beginning at 5:00 PM at the Emergency Management Agency located at 1615 Wilson Parkway in Fayetteville.

This free community event will feature multiple guest speakers, local financial institutions, and community partners who will discuss current scam trends, fraud prevention, identity theft protection, and ways to keep yourself and your family safe.

Reminder Time:
Scams happen all year round, but they are especially prevalent this time of year as tax forms go out and returns are being filed. They seem to have gotten an earlier start than usual this year too.

Never share personal information with anyone you do not personally know. Not over the phone, not by text, and especially not over the internet.

Your bank, the IRS, and Medicare will not call, text, or email you asking for information.

Do not accept packages addressed to an unknown name at your address. If they were delivered without your acceptance, just return to sender.

Never click on any links in an email unless you personally requested it beforehand (and even then, think twice or twenty times about doing so).

That big red "locked" screen telling you to call a 1-800 number for support is fake. Just turn the power off on your computer completely, then restart.

If something seems questionable, it probably is. Don't be afraid to reach out if something seems fishy.
