The CEO of Google Cloud is posting job openings on LinkedIn himself.

Not a recruiter. The CEO.

The role he can't fill? Forward Deployed Engineer — or FDE for short. And it's about to be the hottest job in tech for the next few years.

Here's the short version of what an FDE actually does:

The traditional Solutions Engineer talks to the customer, goes back to engineering, builds a solution, comes back to demo, then the customer says "actually I wanted something else" — and the cycle starts again. Months pass. Everyone gets frustrated.

A Forward Deployed Engineer skips that loop. They sit inside the customer's office, eat in their cafeteria, observe how the team actually works, and build solutions with AI in real time. Demo today. Ship Friday.

Same wine, different bottle — but the cycle is fast, the work feels real, and the comp band is higher than standard SWE.

One non-negotiable trait: you have to be sweet-spoken. Bruise a customer's ego and you're out the door, no matter how good your code is.
