In 1956, IBM introduced the first commercial hard drive—the IBM 305 RAMAC Model 350. It could store just 5 megabytes of data, yet the machine weighed over a ton and was the size of two large refrigerators. Engineers had to physically transport it using forklifts and trucks.

Back then, 5 MB was revolutionary. It allowed companies to store digital information instead of relying solely on punch cards and paper records. Businesses could now access data faster, although the drive itself still required specialized operators to run and maintain.

Today, we carry thousands of times more storage in our pockets, in devices weighing less than 200 grams. This massive leap in technology over just a few decades is a testament to human ingenuity and the rapid pace of innovation. That 5MB hard drive paved the way for the digital world we live in today.
