In case you don't catch our article in the Emmitsburg News Journal, if you have Xfinity / Comcast email - We wanted to share this one on Facebook as this information may be very important to you!
Comcast customers will soon notice a significant behind the scenes change to their email service as Xfinity transitions its mail system to Yahoo’s servers. While email addresses will remain the same, the email servers that support them will not, and that shift brings a few important considerations for anyone who relies on a Comcast email account.
Comcast has stated that the move is intended to modernize its email platform and improve security. For most customers, the transition should be straightforward, but only if their account information is current. Many long time users haven’t logged into the Comcast website in years, relying instead on Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or their phone’s built in mail app. Those apps, however, cannot complete the transition on the user’s behalf. Comcast requires customers to sign in through the Xfinity website to verify their identity.
That verification step is where many people may run into trouble. Comcast will ask users to confirm a recovery email address, a mobile phone number, and their date of birth. If any of this information is outdated or no longer accessible, the system may not allow the transition to complete. In those cases, customers risk being locked out of their accounts until they can prove ownership — a process that can be time consuming and frustrating, especially for those who no longer have access to an old phone number or recovery email.
Once the transition occurs, customers who use third party email programs will also need to update their settings. Because the mail servers will now be operated by Yahoo, the incoming and outgoing server information will change. Some older programs that do not support modern authentication may require the use of an app specific password. Every device that checks Comcast email — computers, tablets, and phones — will need to be re authenticated. Until those updates are made, email may stop sending or receiving even though the address itself remains active.
For users who skip the verification process or discover too late that their recovery information is outdated, the consequences can be immediate. Password prompts may appear repeatedly, folders may fail to sync, and in some cases, access to the mailbox may be blocked entirely until the account is updated through Comcast’s verification system.
As this transition rolls out, it’s a good time for Comcast customers to take a moment to log in, review their account details, and ensure everything is accurate. A few minutes of preparation now can prevent a great deal of inconvenience later.
