Here’s a new scam. If you get a text or email like this, mark it as spam and delete it. DO NOT CLICK THE LINK IN THE MESSAGE. This is the latest in the never-ending line of scams released on the public. But please, don’t ever click on links in texts, especially from unknown numbers. This is how people end up losing control of the phones, tablets and computers. This is also how people end up having their bank accounts wiped out or identities stolen. All they need is access, then they can do what they want either privately or overtly. It can be as simple as falling for a message like this.

With the chance of power outages this weekend, make sure to turn off and unplug your work and personal computers. Putting them to sleep is not the same as shutting them down. So shut them down when you leave the office and unplug your computers at home when you’re not using them this weekend.

Also, make sure to plug your space heaters directly into the wall and NOT into surge protectors. Surge protectors are not designed to handle the power load of heaters. You’re asking for a house fire when you do this. If you need it to stretch further, plug it into a heavy duty extension cord suited for appliances. These are all three-pronged and have thicker wires to handle indoor and outdoor power. If yours is only two-pronged, it’s not made to run a heater.

Be smart with power-consumption this weekend. Doing your part literally helps the grid. Everyone doing their part keeps the grid working seamlessly. Keep the heat between 65-70 (if you’re chilly, bundle up), keep things unplugged if you’re not using them, and turn off lights when you aren’t using them. Be responsible and be safe.

We want everyone to be aware of an ongoing phone scam. If you receive a call from a number you don’t recognize, whether on your cell or at work, don’t answer the call. If it’s important, they will leave you a message.

The scam is simple and dangerous. You pick up the phone and say “hello,” only to have 4-5 seconds of silence before you again say “hello” or something else to get their attention. That’s all they wanted from you. They have now recorded your voice and can use AI software to create recordings of what sounds like you. They can then call people you know with an AI-generated voice message and make it sound like you’re in trouble and need money. They can also use your voice to have AI create media to help them blackmail you. And with AI being so realistic, it can be almost impossible at times to tell if what you’re hearing or seeing is real or fake. Half the planet is fooled each day by simply watching TikTok videos or Reels. The amount of AI-generated content on there is unprecedented and is being used simply to cause more divide or controversy. It’s literally created to manipulate you, and it’s working.

So again, for the time being, don’t answer those calls from unknown numbers. It’s not worth the risk. Don’t be a victim.

Not all computers can upgrade to Windows 11. If you are needing to know if your computer is eligible to upgrade to Windows 11, follow these steps:

1. Click this link to download the PC Health Check App

https://aka.ms/GetPCHealthCheckApp

2. Once it has installed and you have it opened, click the “Check now” option, as seen in the picture I’ve included.

3. If you are eligible, you can go to the link here and install the Windows 11 Installation Assistant to walk you through the upgrade. (It’s a free upgrade that doesn’t require you to be computer savvy.)

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

If you’re not eligible, it will tell you the reason(s) why, which typically has to do with incompatible hardware. This would mean you must stay on Windows 10 or buy a computer with Windows 11.

Microsoft will end support on October 15, but this does NOT mean your computer will stop working. It just means that Microsoft will no longer send out security and system updates. You can keep using your computers until they just can’t do what you need them to do anymore, which could be months or years.

Even with McAfee on this computer, I scanned the system with another program and found nearly 800 threats that McAfee didn’t find. That’s because McAfee is quite possibly the worst antivirus/malware program in the world today. Since being sold to Intel over a decade ago, it has become the worst-rated AV software available. All they care about now is selling you more McAfee-licensed products instead of protecting your devices. The same can be said for Norton. Both bog down your computer more than any other AV software, while protecting you less than even Microsoft Defender. If you’re still using McAfee or Norton, it’s time to move on. You’re literally wasting your money.

This is why we tell people to have paid antivirus software and to keep a backup of their data. This is ransomware. It silently installs itself when someone clicks on unknown attachments in emails or links in messages. Once it gets into your system, it spreads like wildfire and encrypts all of your files, disables specific system services, deletes all restore points, and makes it nearly impossible to do anything. You can’t undo it. If the governmental decryption tools we have can’t recover your files, you lose everything. We can remove the infection, but can’t decrypt your files. That can typically only be done by the group that created the ransomware, and it will cost you a pretty penny for them to do it. And even then, they could just simply take the money and run without following through on the decryption. They’ll give you an email address to contact, but then want you to pay with cryptocurrency so it can’t be traced by the government.

If you aren’t already doing it, please get yourself protected and start backing up your data. If you aren’t sure how, come see us. Don’t be a victim.

We need to talk.

Please don’t fall for the incredible amount of scams currently circulating. If you are receiving a text message from someone claiming to be a company, it’s fake. Big companies won’t text you. They very rarely even call people. You would likely only hear from them in your email or physical mail, and that would typically be for two reasons: a bill or a follow-up to something you initiated.

The newest scam is a text message from someone claiming to be offering you a job, either through a job recruiter or through Indeed. It’s fake. DON’T FALL FOR SCAM TEXTS! Companies aren’t going to initiate contact through a text message.

If you don’t use McAfee or Norton, yet you get messages to renew, it’s obviously a scam. You aren’t even using these products. If you do use them, simply go to their website (Norton.com or McAfee.com), log into your account, and you’ll see if you have an active subscription and when it will renew. Don’t click on links these scammers put in front of you when you can simply go to the sites yourself and verify what’s real.

Microsoft will NEVER contact you for any reason regarding anything you own. Do not fall for that.

If your screen freezes up, claiming your computer has problems, and it has a phone number to call, it’s just a scare tactic. DO NOT CALL THAT NUMBER. Either do a hard shut down on your computer to get out of it. Or you can press Ctrl-Alt-Delete on the keyboard, which would bring up a menu on your screen. Open Task Manager, find the browser you’re in and tell it to shut down.

If you’re truly unsure of something, call us. We will know if it’s real or fake immediately. Text message scams are now becoming as prevalent as scam calls. We are constantly having to undo damage done be scammers, and people are being cheated out of thousands of dollars every week in Freestone County. We’ve seen people lose their entire life savings. Don’t be a victim to this. If you can’t tell if it’s real, we can.

Vyve is down across Freestone County. Technicians are working on the issue. Because of the outage, our phone lines are also down. Until the issue is solved on their end, we will only be able to do limited work. We ask that you be patient.

I have a piece of advice for those that back up their data to external devices. This is very important. If you back up your data to an external device (flash drive or external hard drive) and then remove that data from your computer to clear space, your backup is no longer a backup. It’s the ONLY copy of it. If your external device dies, you just lost everything because you also removed that data from your computer.

Back up your data, but also leave it on your device. A backup is meant to be a SECOND copy, not the only copy. The only way you can avoid this is by backing up to a cloud service, such as OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive, Carbonite, etc. You can access cloud services from anywhere at anytime, and they allow you to remove data from your computer if you need the extra space.

Again, a backup is not a backup if it’s the only copy.

Rod and Julie are on a well-deserved vacation and will be out until Tuesday, April 15. Dylan will still be working in and out of the office during this time, but because he will be working solo, if anything is dropped off this week, it will NOT be ready until next week. Vacation time is a rarity in our business, so we appreciate your patience and understanding.

Help us wish Rod the happiest of birthdays! We couldn’t do what we do without him!
