A lot of marketing advice starts with “post more on social media.”

Sometimes that’s the right answer.

Sometimes the answer is updating your website, claiming your Google Business Profile, clarifying your services, or making it easier for people to contact you.

Good marketing isn’t always about doing more.

Sometimes it’s about making the things you already have work better.

One of the biggest misconceptions about websites is that they’re primarily a design project.

Most of the time, they’re actually an organizational project.

When I started working with Room for Love, the mission was already incredible. The challenge was ensuring visitors could easily understand what the organization does, how to get involved, and how to support its work.

We focused on creating a dedicated homepage, simplifying navigation, making donations easier to find, and bringing volunteer opportunities to the forefront.

A good website isn’t just prettier than the old one.

It’s easier to use.

Take a look at the finished site and the amazing work they’re doing:

One of my favorite parts of owning multiple businesses is getting to grow alongside my clients.

Years ago, I photographed this client’s wedding. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with them again on not one, but two author websites, along with updated headshots and branding photos for each new venture.

Watching people step into new chapters of their lives, businesses, and creative work is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

This month feels like a fitting time to celebrate that. Pride is about authenticity, growth, and having the freedom to be fully yourself.

As someone who works with a lot of LGBTQ+ clients, it’s always an honor to help bring those stories to life.

You can check out both author sites here:

Me: trying to balance websites, marketing, photography, client emails, deadlines, and approximately forty-seven browser tabs.

Thankfully, organization is kind of my thing.

Most of what I do for clients comes down to creating systems, simplifying processes, and making things easier to manage.

Because running a business is hard enough.

Your website, marketing, and content shouldn’t make it harder.

A lot of small business owners think they're behind on marketing.

But they're also answering emails, serving customers, managing projects, handling bookkeeping, putting out fires, and trying to remember what day it is.

Of course, marketing keeps sliding down the list.

Most small businesses don't need to be posting every day.

They don't need a complicated funnel.

They don't need to be on every platform.

They need a website that works.
A few consistent ways to stay visible.
And a plan they can actually keep up with.

That’s where I spend most of my time helping clients.

Marketing gets a lot easier when the goal isn't perfection.

It's showing up consistently enough that people remember you're there.

I run two businesses.

Melissa Koren Photography & You're A Big Deal Digital Marketing.

From Weddings to Web Design may not seem like the most linear path, but honestly, it never felt like an awkward progression.

Photography.
Websites.
Social media.
Marketing.

They're all really about helping people decide whether they trust you.

A great headshot isn't about looking perfect - it puts a face to the business.

A good website isn't about winning design awards - it helps people understand what you do.

A social post isn't about going viral - it's to remind them you're still there.

Different tools. Same goal.

It's all communication.

It's helping someone understand who you are and decide whether they want to take the next step.

The businesses that connect best are usually the ones willing to show up as themselves.

One of my favorite parts of Lauren's review for the new Sunspell Flora website wasn't about the design.

It was this:

"She provided some worksheets for me so the website felt authentic to my small business."

Because honestly? Most people don't struggle with the website itself.

They struggle with figuring out what to say.

They're experts in what they do, but when it's time to explain it on a website, suddenly they're staring at a blank screen, wondering where to start.

That's why every website project starts with a lot of questions.

Not because I'm trying to make more work for clients, but because the best websites sound like the business owner, not the web designer.

The design matters.

The photos matter.

But if the website doesn't feel like you, none of that matters much.

And in Lauren’s case, having gorgeous flowers certainly didn’t hurt. 🌸 (to say I was obsessed is a gross understatement)

Sunspell Flora grows seasonal flowers in Essex County, MA, and every image on this site made me more convinced I should turn my yard into a cut flower extravaganza.

You don’t need to be on every platform, posting every day, to have a real marketing plan.

Your actual marketing plan lives where three things overlap:
where your people actually are
what you can realistically keep up with
what you want to be known for

If one of those pieces is missing or misdirected, it’s exhausting, ineffective, or both.

If you want help figuring out what belongs in the overlap for your business, start with my contact form and tell me what you’re currently juggling: youreabigdeal.com/contact.

Bare minimum marketing doesn’t mean “doing the least you can get away with.”

It means picking a realistic level of effort you can actually sustain, rather than promising yourself a content calendar you’ll resent in three weeks.

Your bare minimum might be:

📧 one email a month
🤳 one social post a week
💻 keeping your Google Business Profile current

The point isn’t to do it all.

The point is to do something consistently enough that people remember you exist.

If you want help figuring out what your “bare minimum” actually looks like, start with my contact form and tell me what’s on your plate right now.

One of my favorite things about working with small businesses is watching people relax about being photographed once we’ve actually started.

You don’t need to feel “photogenic” to get photos that feel like you. At least 90% of my clients will swear they are not, and it’s my job to prove them wrong.

You just need space to be a person, not a statue.

If updated headshots or brand photos are on your “I should really do something about that” list, I can help.
