You're not a bagel.
You don't have to be everyone's favorite.
Your business isn't supposed to appeal to every customer, every personality, or every budget.
It just needs to be a great fit for the people you serve best.
Ironically, the more specific you become about who you are, the easier it is for the right people to find you.
And those are the people worth building your business around.

A website audit isn't about finding things that are "wrong."
It's about finding the little places where visitors get stuck.
Can they figure out what you do?
Can they find what they're looking for?
Do they know what to do next?
Does everything work the way it should on a phone?
Most of the time, improving a website isn't about starting over. It's about making it easier for real people to use.
Small changes can make a big difference when your website is working for your business instead of just existing on the internet.
When was the last time you looked at your website through the eyes of someone visiting it for the very first time?

Professional doesn't have to mean a stark white background.
In fact, I often recommend the opposite.
The right location, natural light, and a relaxed expression can create a headshot that feels just as polished, while showing a little more personality.
There's no single "professional look."
The best headshot is the one your clients recognize when they meet you in person.

Sometimes a client hires me for one project.
A website.
A headshot.
A social media plan.
Then, over time, I become part of their team, helping with whatever comes next.
Those long-term relationships are some of my favorite parts of this business.
Thank you, Amber, for trusting me with yours. Your words mean more than you know.

Ideas are messy.
That's okay.
Good ideas rarely show up in neat little boxes.
They start as conversations.
Random notes.
Sticky notes.
Half-finished thoughts.
The organizing comes later.
And honestly, that's one of my favorite parts of the job.

I accidentally collected a gallery of blondes.

Different ages.
Different personalities.
Different reasons for needing photos.

One thing they all had in common?

They wanted images that looked approachable, confident, and authentic, not stiff and awkward.

Mission accomplished.

Every website has a job to do.
Some are designed to sell a service.
Some are meant to tell a story.
Some need to answer questions before people ask them.
This one had a different mission.
As Marketing Administrator for the Exeter Area Chamber of Commerce, I helped create a website for the Great Bay Food Truck Festival, giving people one place to find everything they needed: tickets, participating food trucks, parking information, FAQs, sponsors, and volunteer details.
The goal wasn't to create something flashy.
It was to make it easy for thousands of people to find what they were looking for and enjoy the event.
Good web design isn't one-size-fits-all.
The best websites are built around what visitors actually need to accomplish.

Perfection has never been the goal.
Connection is.
The most effective brand photos aren't the ones where everything is perfectly posed or perfectly polished.
They're the ones that feel like the person someone is about to hire.
That's why brand photography is about so much more than a headshot.
It's your workspace.
Your personality.
The little details that make your business yours.
The moments that help people picture themselves working with you.
When your photos feel authentic, your marketing does too.
I wrote more about why authentic brand photography consistently outperforms "perfect" photos, and how to plan a session that actually reflects your business.

One of the things I love most about this work is that no two days look the same.
One morning I'm photographing a therapist.
The next afternoon I'm reorganizing someone's website.
Then I'm writing a newsletter, building a homepage, planning social media, or helping a business owner untangle six ideas into one clear message.
It probably sounds like a strange mix.
To me, it all feels like the same job.
Helping good people communicate what makes them a big deal.

Not every brand photo needs to be taken in an office.
Sometimes the right location says just as much about your business as the person in the photo.
A favorite coffee shop.
A workshop.
A downtown sidewalk.
A studio.
A farm.
A bookstore.
The goal isn't just to find a pretty background.
It's to create images that feel authentic to you and your brand.
One quick note: if you're planning to use a local business as a backdrop, always ask first!
