Something we've noticed working with organizations across industries for nearly 40 years.

The ones that tend to recover from security incidents faster aren't always the ones with the biggest budgets. They're the ones that had already mapped the risk before anything went wrong, meaning they knew who owned what, where the exposure lived, and what a response would actually look like.

Something worth thinking about before the next submittal goes in.

One of the more common late-stage friction points on commercial projects happens when the owner's IT team sees the technology specifications for the first time at submittal. Not because the design was wrong, but because it wasn't aligned to their existing infrastructure standards. Wrong switching vendor, unsupported DAS carrier, an access control system that doesn't integrate with their enterprise platform.

By that point, the options get expensive and the schedule gets complicated.

What tends to prevent it is a conversation early in design between the architect, the technology designer, and the owner's IT team before the CDs lock in what's possible. It doesn't have to be a long conversation. Ninety minutes at SD can change the trajectory of the whole technology scope.

It's one of the things we've found most valuable in our work with architects over the years, and we thought it was worth sharing.

Something significant happened to UCaaS and CCaaS this year.

There's a moment in every commercial project where the technology conversation shifts from "we should plan for this" to "we need to fix this."

It usually happens around 90% construction documents. Sometimes at submittal. Occasionally during commissioning.

By then, the options are expensive.

The TR that's two sizes too small. The conduit pathway that runs through a structural beam. The wireless coverage plan that doesn't account for the Owner's DAS requirements. The access control system that the IT department has never seen and won't approve.

None of these are surprises in retrospect. Every one of them had a moment (early in design) where a single conversation would have changed the outcome. We have that conversation at SD. Every time. If you have a project starting schematic design in the next 60 days, it's worth a call.
