It lives. Just got a new motherboard installed so she finally powers on 🫠 I swear this computer hates me since I changed out its brain a couple months ago. I finally had it working and updating again and then she did this nonsense.

I’ve had a lot of questions about password managers from clients lately so I wanted to share some thoughts. I would never trust a free password manager unless it was as part of a paid software package for example Norton and McAfee have password managers as part of your paid subscription. But I would not use a standalone free one. Password managers work by storing your passwords in some form of high level encryption and will automatically populate the username and password for websites for you to log you in. I’ve had folks that used a free standalone manager that all of a sudden stopped working and the developer for the software wasn’t offering support. I had to help them go through resetting 100s of passwords. Look my general rule is that for business especially in an office you shouldn’t have your passwords physically written down but use a password manager software. Most antivirus providers offer a decent one with your subscription or use the built in managers with Chrome or Apple. The benefit with Chrome and Apple password managers is that they let you know if any of your passwords have shown up in a data leak so you can change them before you get hacked. If it’s for personal use and you have the ability to safely store your passwords, by all means write them down. A password journal or index cards are totally ok. Do it in pencil for easier updating. You can also use a password manager for personal use if you prefer to do it that way.

Thought I would start posting some of my hardware repairs. I’ve done quite a few battery replacements on MacBooks but this one is pretty far gone. Any time you have an internal battery and you notice your device is no longer flat where it used to be you should take it in asap or you risk it exploding and starting a fire. We use batteries with lithium in them in our electronics and lithium when exposed to oxygen has a pretty lively reaction you don’t want anywhere near you. These MacBook batteries have some heavy adhesive on them so they don’t move around so I need to be pretty delicate with this removal. 😳

Hey Guys! I've gotten a few phone calls about emails like the one pictured lately. DO NOT click the link! They will hack your email account and spam your contacts asking for money!

Three easy ways to tell if an email is legit are:

1. Is the subject spelled correctly, no grammatical errors and has no special symbols? Legitimate communications from a business are not going to go out with any of those!

2. Is it sent directly to your email address, or was it sent to multiple addresses? Legitimate communications will show the they were sent to your name or email address and won't show any other recipients information! That is a violation of data privacy laws in the state of Colorado!

3. Hit reply and see what the reply to address shows as. If it replies to a person's direct email or the domain (everything after the @ symbol in your email address) is not the business that they are trying to appear to be then it's bogus!

Another red flag is the highly threatening language in the body of the email. It's highly unlikely that any legitimate large corporate business is going to send you something like this, because it would open them up to some major class action lawsuits. So be smart and stay safe out there!

It’s been a while! So what am I up to? I’ve done a couple of odd jobs for folks and I’m doing invoicing and stuff for a good friend. I’m reteaching myself html, css and java. Why you ask? Because it’s fun and so I can start building websites from scratch for folks around here. I’ve a much more solid understanding of marketing and what goes into it after my work at VEP. Some of the websites for businesses here in town are a little rough around the edges. You know who you are 😉

Check it out! I added a couple of new services, and I was thinking of offering vastly reduced prices to any non-profits in my area depending on the service needed. I've done troubleshooting for the Newcomers group that I really enjoyed, and would love the opportunity to expand on that. I'm also thinking of taking some classes on web design in the near future, so I can help local businesses with their websites. I can already do some basic design, but I get lost when I get beyond the built in tools. Thoughts?
