Maintenance & Ownership: Signs Your AV System Needs Preventative Maintenance

Most AV systems don't fail overnight. They usually give warning signs first.

If you're experiencing occasional microphone dropouts, inconsistent audio levels, buzzing noises, equipment overheating, unresponsive touch panels, or devices that need frequent reboots, your system may be overdue for preventative maintenance.

Regular maintenance helps identify small issues before they become costly failures. It can extend the life of your equipment, improve system reliability, and reduce downtime during important meetings, services, presentations, and events.

Just like HVAC systems or company vehicles, AV systems perform best when they're inspected and serviced on a regular schedule.

The best time to fix a problem is before it affects your audience.

Project Lessons Learned: The Most Expensive Mistake We've Seen on an AV Project

One of the most expensive mistakes we see on AV projects isn't choosing the wrong equipment.

It's failing to plan the system before construction is complete.

We've been called into projects where conduit was missing, equipment spaces were undersized, cable pathways weren't considered, or power requirements were overlooked. Fixing these issues after walls are closed and finishes are complete can cost far more than the AV equipment itself.

A well-designed AV system starts early in the planning process. When audio, video, and control systems are considered from the beginning, projects run smoother, costs stay under control, and the end result performs the way it was intended.

Good system design isn't just about technology. It's about avoiding expensive surprises.

When designing an audio system, one of the biggest misconceptions is that room size is the most important factor.

In reality, how the room is used often matters much more.

A small conference room used for video meetings has very different audio needs than a small church sanctuary. Likewise, a large warehouse used for announcements requires a different solution than a large performance venue.

The goal is not simply to fill a space with sound. The goal is to deliver clear, intelligible audio for the people using the room and the activities taking place there.

A properly designed system considers the room’s purpose, audience, and day-to-day operation to ensure the best possible experience.

Good system design starts with understanding how the space will be used.

A compressor is one of the most important tools for improving speech clarity during presentations.

Without compression, presenters can sound too quiet one moment and too loud the next — especially with handheld or wireless microphones.

A properly tuned compressor helps by:

• Smoothing out volume changes
• Making speech easier to understand
• Preventing sudden loud peaks
• Creating a more consistent listening experience

The goal isn’t to make the system louder. It’s to make the presenter sound clear and controlled throughout the entire presentation.

Good audio isn’t just about volume — it’s about consistency.

One of the biggest threats to an audio system isn’t the equipment — it’s operator error.

In churches, schools, event venues, and commercial spaces, systems are often used by people with different levels of experience. One incorrect setting or button press can quickly create problems.

That’s why we focus on designing systems that are both reliable and easy to operate.

We help reduce operator error through:

• Simple and user-friendly controls
• Clear equipment labeling
• Protected system settings
• Organized system layouts
• Staff and volunteer training

A great audio system should sound good, operate smoothly, and work consistently no matter who is using it.

Good system design improves both safety and reliability.

One of the most common questions we get is:

“Should we repair our current system… or replace it?”

The answer depends on a few important factors:

• How often the system is failing
• Availability of replacement parts
• Compatibility with newer technology
• Current sound quality and performance
• Cost of repeated service calls
• Safety and reliability concerns
• Future expansion plans

Sometimes a simple repair can extend the life of a system for years.

Other times, continuing to patch an outdated system ends up costing more in downtime, maintenance, and frustration.

At Blasier Pro Audio Visual, we focus on helping customers make the most practical long-term decision for their space, budget, and goals.

The cheapest option today is not always the most cost-effective option long term.

We recently had the opportunity to complete an upgrade at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center.

The “Dirt Room” was upgraded with a new touch screen control panel to simplify operation of the sound system and improve overall usability for the staff and event teams.

One of the biggest advantages of this upgrade is the addition of remote access capability. This allows us to troubleshoot and support the system remotely if issues arise, helping reduce downtime and improve response times.

Technology should make systems easier to operate, easier to maintain, and more reliable for everyday use.

We appreciate the opportunity to support the Chisholm Trail Expo Center with this project.

A clean audio system is not just about appearance.
It is about safety, reliability, and long-term serviceability.

Poor cable management can lead to:
• Signal issues and unwanted noise
• Difficult troubleshooting
• Increased downtime
• Accidental disconnects
• Safety hazards for staff and volunteers
• Expensive service calls later on

At Blasier Pro Audio Visual, we believe every installation should be organized, clearly labeled, and built for future service access.

Because when systems are designed well behind the scenes, they perform better out front.

Good cable management may not be the first thing people notice… but it is one of the first things technicians appreciate.

One of the best ways to save money on an audio system is planning for future expansion from the beginning.

Many organizations install systems that only meet their current needs, but as facilities grow, ministries expand, or technology changes, those systems can quickly become limited.

Planning ahead can help avoid:
• Expensive system replacements
• Extra labor costs from reinstallation
• Compatibility issues with new equipment
• Limited input or output capacity
• Infrastructure that cannot support upgrades

A well-designed AV system should allow room for growth by considering future speakers, microphones, video integration, networking, and control options before installation even begins.

Investing in scalability today can save significant time, money, and frustration later.

05/13/2026

One of the most common audio problems people experience is electrical noise and grounding issues.
That unwanted hum, buzz, or interference in a sound system is not always caused by bad equipment. In many cases, the real issue comes from improper grounding, power distribution, or electrical interference within the building.

These problems can lead to:
• Distracting noise during presentations or services
• Intermittent signal issues
• Equipment performance problems
• Increased wear on system components
• Reliability concerns during important events

A properly designed and installed AV system should include more than just great speakers and mixers. Clean power, proper grounding, and system integration all play a major role in long-term reliability and performance.
Good audio is not just about volume - it’s about clarity, consistency, and dependability.
