One of my favorite quotes about design comes from Stefan Sagmeister:

“To be a good designer, you would need to have deep and far-reaching interests outside of the profession.”

I’ve thought about that quote for years, but it feels particularly relevant right now as AI makes it easier than ever to create things that look designed.

There’s a big difference between generating an image and understanding why something works. Good designers spend years building a visual vocabulary from art, architecture, photography, film, music, history, business and all kinds of things that seemingly have nothing to do with design.

Then there’s the practical knowledge required to make the thing actually work once it leaves your screen and enters the real world.

AI is an incredible tool. I use it every day.

But the tool was never the thing that made someone a designer.

Studio Note 59: Deep and far-reaching.

AI can make things that look designed. But great design comes from curiosity, experience, production knowledge and interests far beyond the profession.

The store did everything right.

I only remember the crappy cart.

One bad wheel wasn't enough to ruin my trip to the grocery store, but it was enough to become the only thing I remembered afterward.

It's funny how often businesses work the same way.

Studio Note No. 19 is about friction, first impressions and why small annoyances often leave a bigger impression than all the things you did right. 🙌

People rarely remember the dozens of things that worked exactly as they should. Those are invisible because they're expected. What stands out are the little interruptions that pull us out of an otherwise good experience.

If your customer only remembered one thing about your business...
..would it be the thing you wanted them to remember?

Today's Studio Note is about clarity, priorities and why saying everything often means saying nothing at all.

Sometimes the most effective thing you can do isn't add another message.

It's decide which one matters most.

When everything is presented as equally important, nothing stands out long enough to be remembered. That's why the strongest brands aren't necessarily the ones with the most information. They're the ones with the clearest priorities.

Some things get better with time.

A favorite leather wallet. A cast iron skillet. A pair of boots that finally fit the way they're supposed to.

We don't replace those things because we're bored with them.

Brands work the same way.

Recognition isn't built by constantly reinventing yourself. It's built by showing up consistently, long enough for people to remember you.

That's what today's Studio Note is about.

Consistency isn't boring. It's how trust is earned.

The reality is that almost nobody sees your brand as often as you do. What feels repetitive to you is often what makes your business recognizable to them.

Just because you can add another page, another feature, another service or another paragraph doesn't mean you should.

The strongest brands I've worked on didn't become better because we added more.

They became better because we had the discipline to remove what wasn't helping.

Restraint isn't about doing less.

It's about making room for what matters.

Studio Note No. 11 is now live.

It's tempting to believe that adding more creates more value. In reality, the opposite is often true. Good businesses know how to say yes. Great businesses know when to say no.

One of the most common things we hear from business owners is:

"We'll invest in branding once we're making more money."

We get it. When you're growing a business, every dollar already has a purpose.

But what if looking more professional isn't the reward for success?

What if it's one of the reasons success happens in the first place?

Studio Note No. 10 explores why your presentation matters long before anyone experiences your work.

A better website doesn't make you better at your job. Professional photography doesn't improve your craftsmanship. Thoughtful design doesn't suddenly make your service more reliable. What it does is remove doubt.

Twenty-five years ago, a t-shirt designed by Experimental Jetset changed the way I thought about graphic design.

This week, I revisited that idea with a small homage sticker—not to recreate the original, but to acknowledge the creative lineage that influences every designer, musician, filmmaker and artist.

This week's Studio Notes is about inspiration, respect and why nothing great exists in a vacuum.

The important part is that we aren't borrowing aesthetics. We're borrowing principles. The best creative work doesn't just teach you what to make. It changes the way you see.

The best branding projects don't start in Illustrator.

They start with questions.

Not because we need to collect information, but because the right questions uncover things that even business owners haven't fully articulated yet.

One of our recent clients told us that before we'd designed a logo or built a website, our discovery process had already helped him better define his business and evaluate his overall plan.

That might be my favorite compliment we've received.

This week's Studio Note is a look behind the curtain at why discovery is one of the best parts of every branding project. 🙌

One of the first questions we ask every client is what inspired them to start their business. For this client, the answer wasn't a market opportunity or a five-year plan. It was a woman who had recently lost her husband.

Have you ever walked into a place and immediately had a sense of what the experience was going to be like?

That's branding at work.

It isn't just your logo or your website. It's every signal your business sends before you've earned a customer's trust. The strongest brands don't make the biggest promises, they simply keep the ones they make. 🙌

Today's Studio Note is about the relationship between branding, expectation and trust.

Every business is making promises, whether they realize it or not. Some are explicit. "24-hour service." "Locally owned. "Free estimates." Those are easy to identify because they're written down. The more powerful promises, though, are the ones you never say out loud.

If we had our way, we'd probably use red more often.

But if a financial advisor hired us to build their brand, red wouldn't even make the list.

Not because red is a bad color. Because branding isn't about what we or our clients like. It's about what helps the right people trust the business.

That's true whether we're talking about color, typography, photography or messaging.

The best branding decisions aren't personal. They're purposeful.

One of the most common misconceptions about branding is that it should reflect the owner's personal taste. Your branding isn't for you. It's for the people you're trying to reach.
