Cargill says high cattle costs hammered its beef business, and it still cleared $927 million in three months.
That’s about $10 million a day from June through August. Roughly $420,000 an hour while you were asleep.
The headline number says profit fell 52 percent. A year ago the same quarter made $1.94 billion, but that one got a big boost from a tax provision in last year’s federal tax law.
Cargill declined to comment to Bloomberg, which reviewed the company’s accounts.
When a company earning $10 million a day says cattle cost too much, does that sound like hardship or like the market finally working for ranchers? Pick one.
