Answer me this..... We're all going crazy planning for a major winter storm that we've been told is coming now for quite a bit of time. So we run out, buy groceries, and now the shelves are bare.
Did somebody forget to tell the grocery stores?
Why haven't they planned as equally ahead for the need based on the impending and forecasted storm?
Shop local, plan ahead, and be smart.
Plus, you're more likely to help out a small business by buying their fresh meats, cheeses, and produce that will sustain you for an extended period of time, and reduce their waste during a time in which they may not be able to conduct normal business!
Remember, food safety- if it's cold and to hold, keep it below- 40 is the new black... Above 40 for too long, it's in the red, and it could wreck your head! (By too long, it's longer than two hours.) Water may remain running, but be sure to use a good antibacterial soap, and wring your fingers and make more suds- Include the numbers with your ABC's if the water is cold.
Previously cooked meals are likely safe to eat, provided they already were prepared and met their appropriate cooking temperatures. (i.e. leftovers)
IF the power goes out, it is not recommended to drink tap water. If you have some sanitary jugs or other containers to store some water that will not freeze. Rather than milk that could spoil, consider getting some drinking water now ahead of the storm.
IF the power goes out, don't open your refrigerator unless you absolutely need to. It can safely keep the contents at the appropriate temperature up to six hours if left undisturbed.
Charge your phones and tablets now while the storm is just moving in. If you have power banks, charge them as well. Be ready- just in case! Look around for batteries, flashlights, and any other essentials you may need.
When it's all said and done, power or not, look in on your neighbors and make sure your community is safe. If you're able, help those around you, especially the elderly, and those who may not be able to help themselves.
Remember, 9-1-1 is only for emergencies- keep those lines open for people in real need. If you feel tired or worn down- or smell rotten eggs, get out of your house immediately and make sure everyone else is out too- it could be a gas leak.
Be safe, be alert, and look out for each other! As I finish writing this, I see the first flakes falling. Be kind, and we'll get through this together!
