Try this when you have a minute. Search your business from your own shop. Chances are, you show up near the top.

Now have someone across town search the same thing. Different results.

Local search pays attention to where the searcher is. Ranking first at your counter doesn't mean ranking first across the city, or across the service area you actually work in.

That's why the service area, categories, and consistent business details on your Google Business Profile matter. They help you show up in the neighborhoods you serve, not just the block you stand on.

You don't have to game the system. You just have to tell it the truth about where you work.

Take one real photo of your work this week and add it to your Google Business Profile.

Not a polished marketing shot. Just the actual work: the finished repair, the fresh inventory, the clean install, the table you just set.

Why it matters: when someone compares two businesses on Maps, they're partly checking which one still looks alive. Photos from three summers ago quietly suggest things have changed.

The whole thing takes about two minutes from your phone camera roll. Do it once a week and the profile takes care of itself.

A customer who's already decided to call you is the easiest customer you'll ever get. Don't make them hunt for the number.

Open your website like a stranger would. How many taps does it take to find your phone number? Is it clickable on a phone, or just a picture of text? Is your address buried in the footer where nobody scrolls?

Most websites don't lose customers with bad design. They lose them with hidden contact info and a missing call button.

Take five minutes today: put your number, hours, and a tap-to-call button where a first-time visitor sees them without looking.

Your best customer found you through a friend. Their next five options will come from Google.

Word of mouth built this place. But when someone new moves into the neighborhood, or a regular recommends you to a coworker, that person checks their phone before they check your reputation. If your listing is thin, outdated, or buried, they call the shop down the street instead.

Your reputation didn't get worse. Your visibility just stopped matching it.

None of this means you need to become a marketing expert. It means the basics, kept current, matter more than they used to.

A review response should sound like it came from someone who actually read the review.

A simple weekly check: look for new reviews, thank the person for a specific detail they mentioned, and answer any practical question clearly. If a concern needs follow-up, take it offline rather than arguing in public.

That kind of attention helps keep your profile useful to the next customer, too.

Quick Google Business Profile check for this week: make sure your hours match your website and your front door.

If your schedule changed, update the special hours too. A customer who finds one set of hours on Google and another on your site has to guess whether you’re open. Clear, matching information makes it easier to plan a visit.

Take a minute to compare both listings today.

A customer shouldn’t have to pinch and zoom to figure out how to reach your business.

Open your website on your phone as if you’ve never seen it before. Can you tell what you do, where you work, and how to call or book within a few seconds? If not, simplify the first screen and make the next step obvious.

A polished website can still make customers work too hard.

If the first screen does not quickly explain what you do, where you serve, and what someone should do next, a good-looking design will not fix the confusion.

Look at your website like a first-time customer today. Can they find your main service, current hours, phone number, and next step without hunting through the menu?

Clear beats clever when someone is trying to decide whether to call.

Your Google Business Profile should answer the simple questions before a customer has to call.

Open your profile and check the Services section. Are the names clear? Do they match what you actually offer? Is anything listed that you stopped doing months ago?

A customer looking for a florist, contractor, salon, or repair shop should not have to guess whether you handle the job they need. Clear services make the next step easier — and they give Google better information about what your business does.

Pick one service today and make sure the name, description, and availability are current.

The doors are locked, the tools are cleaned, and the marketing list is still sitting there.

A lot of local business owners do the work customers see all day, then try to handle the online work after closing. Update the website. Check Google. Add photos. Answer reviews. Fix the detail that changed last week.

That is not a motivation problem. It is what happens when one person is running the business and carrying the marketing too.

Start with the one piece of information customers are most likely to need this week, and make sure it is current.
