During storms, especially ones where there is a good possibility of losing electricity (wind, ice, lightning etc), power down your electronics to prevent damage incase of a power disruption. Mostly referring to computers and monitors, but this also can prevent damage to other devices like TVs. Power outtages can cause power surges that could cause damage to power supplies, motheboards and even hard drives where your data is stored. Turning the devices off before hand is usually enough to protect them, but if you want to be more sure, you can also unplug the power cables from the outlets. Be safe and stay warm!

How to Dispose of Your Old Computer or Mobile Device

Your computer and mobile device holds sensitive information like passwords, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, photos, and your internet browsing history. Before disposing of your device, it is important to take steps to ensure that this information is permanently removed. To permanently remove the data from your computer or mobile device, it needs to be wiped clean or reset.

We can reset your computer or mobile device, and save the files that you want to keep. Files on your computer can be backed up in a variety of ways: to an external hard drive, a USB drive, or directly to a new computer. Data from your mobile device can often be backed up directly to a computer, or a cloud based service offered by your mobile provider, if the device is still functioning.

After we have backed up the information on your computer or mobile device, we will wipe the hard drive clean and destroy it. Mobile devices have a β€œfactory reset option,” which will permanently remove the information in its memory, again only if its still functioning.

Now that your device has been wiped clean, you are ready to safely dispose of it. Computers and mobile devices contain a variety of toxic materials that can harm the soil, water, and air including lead and cadmium, so it is important to dispose of your device responsibly. At PCFixMe you can drop off your device for disposal or recycling.

Security Update – 7 Tips for Protecting Yourself Online

Keep your computers and mobile devices up to date. Having the latest security software, web browser, and operating system are the best defenses against viruses, malware, and other online threats. Turn on automatic updates so you receive the newest fixes as they become available.
Set strong user names and passwords. A strong user name and password combination is key to preventing fraudulent access to your accounts. Avoid using first names or common words as a user name. A strong password is at least ten characters in length and includes a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
Watch out for phishing scams. Phishing scams use fraudulent emails and websites to trick users into disclosing private account or login information. Do not click on links or open any attachments or pop-up screens from sources you are not familiar with.
Keep personal information personal. Hackers can use social media profiles to figure out your passwords and answer those security questions in the password reset tools. Lock down your privacy settings and avoid posting things like birthdays, addresses, mother’s maiden name, etc. Be wary of requests to connect from people you do not know.
Secure your internet connection. Always protect your home wireless network with a password. When connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, be cautious about what information you are sending over it.
Shop safely. Before shopping online, make sure the website uses secure technology. When you are at the checkout screen, verify that the web address begins with https. Also, check to see if a tiny locked padlock symbol appears on the page.
Read the site’s privacy policies. Though long and complex, privacy policies tell you how the site protects the personal information it collects. If you don’t see or understand a site’s privacy policy, consider doing business elsewhere.

As always be online Smart. Do not ever let anyone you dont know or trust take control of your computer, even if they sound legit. Microsoft will never call you......but feel free to call us if you are unsure!
