He'll give it to you straight - whether it's a new product review or the news that you lost all your great-grandmother's recipes when your hard drive crashed. Even though he's the big boss man, he's still out there making house calls, running the store (check 'em out on Facebook), and keeping thousands of Mac users happy. And, of course, he's earned every Apple certification available (and a few that we think he made up). When he's not putting out metaphorical fires for his clients, you'll find Garret putting out real ones as an award-winning volunteer with the Crittenden Fire Company, or watching the sunrise from his deer stand.

Why Your iPhone Battery Health Keeps Dropping

Your iPhone used to make it through a full day with charge to spare. Now it's begging for a charger by mid-afternoon, it shuts off in the cold while you scrape the windshield, and when you open Settings, the Maximum Capacity number reads 81% or lower. It's natural to wonder whether you can fix iPhone battery health the same way you'd fix a software glitch. The honest answer is that you can't raise that percentage with a setting, an app, or a charging trick. Battery health measures how much charge your lithium-ion battery can hold compared to when it was new. That capacity shrinks as the battery goes through charge cycles, because the chemistry inside it slowly and permanently degrades.

Warlock Exploits SharePoint Flaws to Disable Security Tools and Deploy Ransomware

What& ;s Happening: A Persistent Group Keeps Targeting SharePoint

A threat group tracked as Warlock, which researchers suspect has ties to China, is still exploiting weaknesses in Microsoft SharePoint, months after those flaws first made headlines. According to Symantec and Carbon Black threat hunters, recent activity has focused on organizations in Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries. Victims include critical infrastructure operators, government agencies, and schools and universities. Some background helps here. In mid-2025, a chain of SharePoint vulnerabilities nicknamed ToolShell let attackers take over on-premises SharePoint servers without logging in. Microsoft released patches, but many organizations were slow to apply them, and some patched without completing the follow-up steps that actually lock attackers out. Groups like Warlock noticed.

Five Years of Windows 11: A Look Back from Western New York

Windows 11 launched on October 5, 2021. For many PC owners in Buffalo, Amherst, and East Amherst, it feels like it has been around much longer, and for good reason. Few Windows releases have caused as much confusion, frustration, and second-guessing as this one. When Windows 10 arrived in 2015, it was widely seen as a recovery after the awkward Windows 8 years. It was familiar, it ran on almost anything, and it stayed on desks for nearly a decade. So when Microsoft introduced its successor, many people expected a simple, painless upgrade. That is not what happened. The biggest shock was the hardware list. Windows 11 required a TPM 2.0 security chip, Secure Boot, and a relatively recent processor, roughly Intel 8th generation or AMD Ryzen 2000 series and newer.

Malicious VPN config files can let attackers run commands on Asus routers

Two Serious Flaws Found in Asus Router Firmware

If there's an Asus router sitting on a shelf in your Buffalo living room or tucked behind a desk in your Amherst home office, this one deserves your attention. Asus has released fixes for two security vulnerabilities in its router firmware, and both are rated in the high-to-critical range on the industry's standard severity scale. The first flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-14157, scores 9.4 out of 10 on CVSS 4.0, the scoring system security researchers use to rank how dangerous a bug is. It involves the router's built-in VPN client feature. Many Asus routers let you upload a VPN configuration file through the web management page so the router itself can connect to a VPN service. Researchers found that a specially built configuration file could carry hidden instructions.

Google freezes open-source bug bounty program amid flood of invalid AI slop submissions

What Google Actually Paused, and Why It Made Headlines

Google has temporarily stopped accepting product vulnerability reports through its Open Source Software Vulnerability Reward Program, usually shortened to OSS VRP. A bug bounty program pays outside researchers when they find and responsibly report security flaws. Google announced the change in a post on X on October 1. It pointed participants toward its other reward programs and said it expects to share an update by the first quarter of 2027 while it reworks this part of the program. The reason is what many in the security world now call AI slop. These are vulnerability reports generated largely or entirely by AI tools. They often look polished and technical, but they describe bugs that don't exist, can't be reproduced, or misread how the code works. Each one still has to be read and tested by a real engineer before it can be rejected.

Notorious Spectre CPU vulnerability returns hitting JIT engines via side channel attacks

Spectre Returns: What the New Research Found
If you've been using computers since 2018, the name Spectre may ring a bell. That year, researchers revealed that nearly every modern processor had a design weakness in how it tries to work faster. Chipmakers, operating system developers, and browser companies rushed to patch it. Many people assumed the story ended there. It didn't.A team from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Italy has published research on a new technique they call Branch Target Reuse (BTR). They describe it as the first practical in-place Spectre version 2 attack aimed at just-in-time (JIT) compilers. That's a mouthful, so here's the short version.Modern processors guess what your software will do next and start that work early. This is called speculative ex*****on. When the guess is right, your computer feels snappy.
