Ready for the next step in your career? Dr. Luke Hobson has a great new podcast episode out on “How to Get Promoted as an Instructional Designer.”

In it, he breaks down 10 tips for moving up in your career. Here’s some of the top takeaways:

Follow successful examples

🧑‍🎓Look for people internally who have been promoted before you and ask them what they’ve done to move up. We’ll add that if you don’t have someone internally to ask, reach out to your network or an online community with questions.

→ Dr. Hobson lists some great questions you can use.

Talk with your manager

📑Seems obvious, but make sure to let your desire be known to your manager. And ask them what it would take to reach that next level. This can reveal any gaps you may have and create a roadmap of actionable steps you can take to fast-track a promotion.

Remember, it’s a business case

💼 Your manager will likely need to put together a case as to why you are deserving of a promotion. Hard data points, feedback, and testimonials from colleagues go a long way in proving that case, especially to leadership teams who may not work with you on a day-to-day basis.

→ If you’re having a hard time remembering personal wins, Dr. Hobson recommends starting with your last performance eval and seeing what you’ve accomplished since then.

Did you know it’s National Wellness Month? Us either! 🤯

As learning and development experts, we often focus on helping others grow. And sometimes our own well-being can fall by the wayside.

In fact, our recent poll revealed that 97% of L&D professionals feel some form of burnout regularly! 🥲

Here are some ways you can prioritize self-care:

Set boundaries: Protect your work-life balance by setting clear limits. You can’t pour from an empty cup! ☕

Breaks & delegate: Schedule regular breaks and don’t be afraid to delegate tasks. Remember, work smarter, not harder. ⏰

Continuous learning: Invest in your own growth. Professional development isn’t just for others – keep learning and stay inspired! 🎓

Mindfulness & relaxation: Incorporate mindfulness exercises or physical activities into your daily routine to reduce stress and boost energy. 🧘‍♂️

Seek support: Connect with peers or mentors who understand the challenges of the industry. You don’t have to do it alone! 🤝

Looking for a free LMS? Here’s why that may not be a great idea:

❌ Limited features
☁️ Freemium models often give you access to only a few features and withhold the most valuable ones

❌ Capped users
☁️ Free LMSs generally have user caps, making it difficult to scale when you need to

❌ Lack of support
☁️ With a free LMS, you’re on your own with little to no customer support or coaching

❌ Most LMSs aren’t actually free
☁️ Free LMSs can have a myriad of hidden costs for implementation, maintenance, training, and support
