Running an IT support business means most of the time you hear from clients, they are in a crisis. Rare is it to hear from a client for other reasons.
I have a client with a race car engine dynamometer (takes scientific measurements of the engine for tuning purposes) which is attached to an old MS-DOS based computer running a DOS-based testing program. The computer uses ancient Centronics to LPT printing technology. Modern printers haven't had an LPT port in over 20 years. On top of that, the DOS program was specifically designed only to work with old Epson and HP printers. Finding an old, but still work HP or Epson printer with a functioning LPT port was essentially impossible.
Over the course of 10 months I tried various adapters, other types of printers, and other attempted workarounds, none with success. Eventually my research led me to a highly specialized device that uses a LPT port attached to a tiny computer which has USB ports. The tiny computer, known as a Raspberry Pi, runs a software called CUPS which is a versatile printing system. The device is configured so that raw print data is captured via the LPT/Centronics port, stripped of encapsulating data, re-encapsulated for whatever printer you have chosen, then a print job is sent to that printer via modern USB.
Today my client called me up and was just glowing. This machine is a central part of his business and his customers demand their engine printouts on the spot. The printing issue had been a major fear of his. He said he had customers at the shop all day and the new printing system worked flawlessly, expressed his sincerest gratitude. It's often hard to constantly see and hear people when they are having a really bad time, but it's nice once in awhile to get a big THANK YOU!
In honor of this job, enjoy some of the pictures of the DTS 4000G Dynamometer.
