To keep school two-way radios reliable for daily operations and emergencies, focus on regular inspection, battery care, cleaning, proper storage, and user training.
1. Inspect and test regularly
Do quick daily or weekly radio checks to confirm each unit powers on, transmits, and receives clearly before staff start their shifts.
Look for cracks, loose antennas, worn buttons, or damaged accessories and pull questionable units out of service for repair.
2. Take care of batteries
Use only compatible chargers, turn radios off while charging, and avoid leaving batteries on chargers longer than recommended.
Replace weak or swollen batteries promptly, and consider cycling or replacing batteries about every 3 -5 years for dependable performance.
3. Clean radios the right way
Wipe radios with a soft, dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth; keep speaker, mic, and vents clear of dust, lint, and debris.
Avoid harsh chemicals and don’t grab or carry units by the antenna, which can damage reception over time.
4. Store equipment properly
When not in use, turn radios off, remove batteries if storing long term, and keep everything in a cool, dry cabinet away from extreme temperatures and moisture.
Use holsters or cases to prevent drops and physical damage as staff move around campus.
5. Standardize use and train staff
Set standard channels, volume levels, and basic radio etiquette (listen before talking, short clear messages, agreed codes) and include radio checks in safety drills.
Train new staff and review procedures annually so everyone knows how to use radios during both routine operations and emergencies.
