It’s Throwback Thursday! The Southern Railway first pulled into Goldsboro, North Carolina, in 1894, but the railroad has long been part of the community’s history. Built along the tracks between Wilmington and Raleigh, the town was named for one of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad’s civil engineers. Railroads from the Piedmont and the coastline met in Goldsboro, and the town became a hub of commercial activity.

A Southern Railway photographer gathered this section crew—along with Tippy, the dog—at Goldsboro in 1951. Front row, left to right: Willie L. Carraway, Lester A. Hines, Robey B. Helton, and J. E. Blanchard. Back row, John H. Turner, Boss Kenion, and George P. Marsh.

Then and now, the railroad is about making connections. Norfolk Southern trains transport the nation’s goods to businesses and communities across our approximately 19,500-mile rail network, passing through small towns, big cities, and everywhere in between.
