I think we can potty train the cats?

So somebody came through the alley at 1:45 AM and lit The Regulator Bookshop's cardboard dumpster on fire. Stuck around for a good 10-15 minutes pulling more stuff out of the neighboring recycling carts and shoving it into the dumpster and then fled the scene when he heard the Durham fire crew arriving.

Love it when it's all on camera - even if I can't make out who it is, I can at least tell it's deliberate, which means it's gonna be that much harder for them if they ever get busted.

Apparently the "new Outlook" that Windows is forcing Mail app users to switch to doesn't talk to Spectrum's nc.rr email servers correctly, and Spectrum support doesn't have a clue what to do about it.

(The answer is either to not use Spectrum's garbage email at all, switch to the webmail portal, or use a different email client.)

Just Built:
Ryzen 7 7700X, 32GB DDR5-6400, 2TB Samsung 990 Evo Plus, ASUS ProArt GeForce RTX 4060, 750w power supply, Hyte Y40 case.

This was built for someone who brought us a build from ~2002 -- hand-painted, red, with laser-cut fan grilles -- and asked us to build something new in it. Unfortunately, it wasn't practical to use an older case since modern-height GPUs and CPU coolers wouldn't fit, so we did the next-best thing and used a case with red exterior, and ARGB fans lit up in red. We even managed to incorporate the fan grilles.

We're really impressed with Hyte's cases. Though they obviously have shortcomings just like any case, the thoughtful cable management touches and emphasis on style without losing build quality is pleasing. They're quite pleasant to build in and one of our own staff uses a Y70.

The sheer density of the tiny SMDs under the processor on an M1 MacBook Air is crazy. I can't imagine the cost of the pick-and-place machine that slaps these guys on. [q-tip for scale]

Kayla unearthed this bit of history (from 1998) this morning; it's a delightful trip down memory lane. Amazon is mentioned as a growing business where you can buy books. And just books. The best search engines are Yahoo and Altavista. Netscape Navigator is talked about at length.

We're seeing a LOT of people encountering tech support scam bait pages via Facebook over the last month. Make sure you're using uBlock Origin Lite, and be careful where you click!

We're having an exceptionally slow week, folks, so if you have a repair you've been putting off, it might be a good idea to come see us.

8" floppy drives were absolute BEASTS, just look at the size of those motors. The disk would be spun constantly, not only when being read, which caused heat buildup (and necessitated a case fan). One motor runs straight off mains AC.

This is a Shugart drive, but the connector is wider than typical 80s/90s floppy drives. I wonder if it's possible to hook this thing up to a Greaseweazle for data recovery purposes.

Hey, nice! We're welcoming this TRS-80 Model II, complete with triple 8" floppy drives, to our collection. Tag to come.
