A white cane gives its user important information about the environment around them, but safe and accessible communities require everyone to do their part. Whether you’re driving, biking, or walking, being aware of white cane users and respecting their right of way helps make our shared spaces safer and more accessible.

At Ablr, we’ve seen what’s possible when organizations commit to accessibility and inclusion, and we’re excited to keep building on that progress. There is still plenty of work ahead, and we’re ready for it.

Today is World Sight Day, a day that brings attention to eye health and the importance of access to quality eye care.

For Shannon, Ablr’s Accessibility Training Specialist, sight loss became part of her life at just six years old. Today, she encourages others experiencing sight loss to learn about their changing needs, explore the accommodations available to them, and connect with people who understand what they’re going through.

On World Sight Day, we’re grateful to Shannon for sharing her story and reminding others that they don’t have to navigate sight loss alone.

Accessibility should be considered from the very beginning, especially for services that people with disabilities rely on every day to get where they need to go. Too often, people with disabilities are forced to advocate for access that should have already been there. Building accessibility into policies and practices from the start creates a better experience for everyone, and it’s simply the right thing to do.

October 8: World Sight Day — Raises awareness about blindness, sight loss, and eye health around the world.

October 10: World Mental Health Day — Raises awareness of mental health issues and the importance of access to mental health support.

October 15: White Cane Safety Day — Recognizes the white cane as a tool for independence and mobility for people who are blind or have low vision.

As we recognize NDEAM throughout October, these observances are another opportunity to learn, raise awareness, and continue building more accessible and inclusive communities.

Through Ablr Futures, Moin connected with other visually impaired students and professionals, gained valuable guidance, and built skills that will support him as he moves toward college and his future career.

You don’t need to have your future figured out before joining Ablr Futures. The program gives students space to explore their strengths and interests, build communication and self-advocacy skills, and learn from professionals and peers with similar experiences. The goal is to help students feel more prepared to make informed decisions about college and their career path.
