Data breaches are scary โ and make no mistake, they're getting worse every year. But sometimes headlines are written like clickbait, except this kind of clickbait causes real fear.
You've probably seen it: "Social Security Administration the largest data breach in US history." Here's what actually happened โ no hackers broke into Social Security. Whistleblowers allege government staffers (DOGE) copied the data to places it never should have gone. That's bad, and Congress is investigating. But there's no evidence criminals have your SSN because of it.
So why am I telling you this? Because scammers read headlines too. The real danger right now is the fake "Social Security" calls and texts that ride a story like this one.
Remember: the SSA will NEVER call to "verify your number" or threaten to suspend it. Tell your parents. Tell your team.
Fear is easy marketing for Cybersecurity โ We'd rather earn your trust with the truth.
